About This Pub
Ah, The Malt Shovels – it's one of those classic spots that really captures the heart of a good old British pub, isn't it? From what I've gathered, the ales are spot on, with a fantastic range that's both affordable and delicious, making it a top choice for a quiet afternoon catch-up. The atmosphere is just lovely, all serene and traditional, with those original features that make you feel like you've stepped back in time – perfect if you're after a bit of nostalgia without the hustle and bustle. The staff can be really welcoming too, adding a nice touch to the experience. On the downside, though, it's not all smooth sailing; there have been a few tales of rude service that might leave you a bit miffed, and some folks have noted the place isn't always as spotless as it could be, with dirty tables or even an off-putting smell hanging about. Plus, that no-phone rule is a bit of a throwback that not everyone warms to, and you might run into the odd disruptive crowd. All in all, it's a solid pick if you're in the mood for a straightforward, budget-friendly pint, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations to enjoy the best bits without the surprises.

Gorgeous pub, great ale. Quiet, serene, chilled, cheap. All the beer is fantastic. Grab a newspaper, beer and a sit down for a bit.
Sam's are ace. Loser Christmas drinkers who have zero pub etiquette should stick to the supermarket because it's the only place they actually go.
Unacceptable service - rude
Myself and my friends wandered in for a Christmas Eve drink to this pub. Tables and glasses were dirty, and the whole place smells like urine, but I wasn't going to complain. However, the poor and rude service was the tipping point - being humiliated for not knowing about the 'Sam Smiths' brand and being ridiculed and spoken to like a naughty child by a rather large lady behind the bar. It baffles me why some people think they can behave like this AND ask people to pay for the pleasure! Avoid.
A proper old fashioned pub. It's like stepping back in time in a good way. Very interesting building with original features Close to metro and centre, plus cheap as chips prices.
The staff are always friendly.
Had a quick pit stop while waiting for the bus. A large traditional pub. Being Sam Smiths no phone use allowed. Paulicarus enjoyed a pint of Old Brewery bitter. Very good.
