About This Pub

Ah, The Malt Shovel – it's one of those classic pubs that really pulls you in with its warm vibe and solid offerings, isn't it? From what I've gathered from the chats online, it's got this fantastic lineup of beers and real ales that make it a go-to for anyone who enjoys a proper pint. The staff seem like a friendly bunch, always up for a chat and making sure you're comfortable, which adds to that homely feel in what sounds like a spacious yet snug space. Now, the food's where it gets interesting; when it's good, it's brilliant – think delicious homemade roasts and carvery that have people coming back for more. But, and I have to be straight with you, it's not perfect every time. There are tales of meals turning up a bit dry or underwhelming, like a steak pie that's seen better days, and service that can drag on some visits. Still, with an overall rating hovering around excellent, it's clear this place has more wins than losses. If you're popping in, I'd say go for the beers and keep an eye on the specials – it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening, just temper your expectations a tad for the grub.

Pros and Cons

Cons
  • Food quality can be a bit hit or miss, with some reports of dry or burnt dishes that don't live up to expectations.
  • Service isn't always on point, as a few folks have mentioned sloppy experiences that left them disappointed.
  • There are occasional complaints about meals not being handled well, like when a simple issue raised didn't get sorted properly.

Ordered 5 meals, 4 adult and 1 child meal. The child meal was 1 cold sausage and a few chips. I ordered the steak pie which when it came was dry and burnt, clearly been under a heat lamp for a long time and the gravy was like dishwater. A complaint to a member of staff was of no use. Maybe a one off but should still not happen when paying good money.

Went in on a recent Monday just after 1pm and the service was sloppy . We ordered the steak pie and it did eventually come, but it was definitely re-constituted steak and it was about as tender as old boot leather. The previous week we were in on different days and the meals were not too bad but there was a different "crew" on. Also people with very long hair should not be in the kitchen without caps. We won't be going back!

Malt shovel is a warm friendly run pub in Ashby, the amazing tasty food is incredible with a great menu they have all the time to delicious specials they put on each week. The servings are always more than you expect that I unfortunately sometime can't manage, which disappoints myself because I don't want to leave one single mouthful on the plate. They are very accommodating about the menu, if you don't like something or would rather change a certain aspect to it to your liking they will check it is doable an change it for you. The fresh tasty outstanding food and chefs is just one part to this pub. The staff behind the bar and waiters are lovely happy kind peoplewith amazing engery for front of house, Lucy and her team are a credit to the place which keep you wanting to return time and time again. They are great entertainment on Saturdays with different singers or bands, all together it's a fantastic restaurant/pub. A underrated pub that isn't given enough credit, I would say it is one of the best in Scunthorpe! I'm never disappointed, going each time is like going home. If you've not been yet definitely book a table and get yourself there!! 💞
