About This Pub

Ah, The Malt Shovel—it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper hidden gem in Uxbridge, tucked away by the canal with that charming 19th-century vibe. I've got to say, the setting is brilliant; imagine sipping a pint of real ale while watching the boats go by, or warming up by the fire on a blustery day—it's got that nostalgic, homely charm that makes you want to linger. The food's generally a winner too, with hearty options like pies and burgers that folks rave about, and it's great to see choices for vegetarians and vegans, all at reasonable prices. Plus, the staff come across as genuinely friendly, adding to the relaxed feel. On the flip side, though, there was that one grumble about tiny portions, like those chips that didn't quite live up to expectations for the cost—it might not ruin your visit, but it's worth noting if you're after a filling meal. Overall, it's a solid spot for a catch-up with mates or a quiet drink, especially if you're into that classic country pub experience, but just pop in when it's open to make the most of it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The location by the Grand Union Canal is absolutely stunning—perfect for a relaxing pint with lovely views, whether you're sitting outside on a sunny day or wandering along the towpath afterwards.
  • It's got that cosy, traditional pub feel with crackling log fires and a historic 19th-century building, making it a real treat on chilly evenings.
  • The food is spot on, with hearty classics like pies and burgers that hit the spot, plus plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans, and they've got a great selection of real ales, wines, and gins.
  • Staff are friendly and attentive, as mentioned in several reviews—folks like Katie and Ebony really make you feel welcome.
  • Dog-friendly vibes are a big plus, and there's loads of parking, which is handy if you're driving over.
Cons
  • Portion sizes can be a bit skimpy for the price, like that disappointing bowl of chips that barely filled a snack—might leave you wanting more bang for your buck.
  • It's listed as currently closed in the status, which could be a downer if you're planning a visit soon, so best to double-check before heading out.

Stopped by The Malt Shovel for a quick pint and some chips. The location is really convenient — right next to a busy road with plenty of parking, and it backs onto the Union Canal, offering a lovely view. The atmosphere inside was pleasant, with plenty of outdoor seating which was nice on a sunny day. It wasn’t very busy when we visited, but unfortunately, the tables weren’t very clean, which was a bit disappointing. The same goes for the toilets. Service was quick and efficient. We only had chips, but they were nicely done—crispy and tasty. Although the portion was a bit small. Didn’t get a chance to try the rest of the menu, but overall a good spot for a casual drink by the canal.

Stopped of for a beer, nice place. Ordered some fries for a snack, about six chips turned up in a bowl for just under a fiver. Pretty disgusted to be honest, I would say the amount of chips didn’t even equate to one potato.

Atmospheric; canal side setting and fire side seating... A homely environment, reminiscent of times gone by, yet with a menu of both real olde skool pies, to modern day burgers... Today, looked after by Katie; in a manner allowing one to enjoy the ambience and restful characteristics of this historic venue, whilst watching barges passing by a mere 20-feet from our dining table.

Cosy pub by the canal! I quite like this pub for it's cosy ambience, specially the large fireplaces make it so comfortable in cold days. We have been here few times. Large parking lot, lovely food, friendly staff and good service. Nice drinks available, I liked the bottle of Malbec. We took a stroll by the Grand Union Canal on a dry day.

Had a beautiful meal with my partner. The log burner, decor and ambiance was fitting for the cold weather outside. Food was amazing (would definitely recommend the pie!) and prices were reasonable. There was also lovely vegetarian options (and vegan too!). Our highlight was Ebony who provided excellent service by accommodating our needs, checking up how we were and whether we were happy for the food and also was very sociable and chatty (which is a must in my eyes!). Based on this, I definitely recommend this place and will be going back for another meal soon.
