About This Pub

Ah, The Maid of Muswell – it's one of those neighbourhood gems in London that really knows how to make you feel at home. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the food; think fresh, home-cooked meals that deliver every time, whether you're tucking into a hearty Sunday roast or just grabbing a tasty brunch. The outside seating is a real winner too – it's nicely hidden away, giving you that secluded feel without the hustle and bustle, ideal for catching up with mates on a lazy weekend. And let's not forget the warm, relaxing atmosphere inside; it's spotlessly clean and even welcomes dogs, which is just ace if you're that way inclined. The drinks selection is spot on as well, with plenty of options to explore. But, to keep it real, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few tales of minor food mishaps, like the gravy not being up to scratch, and that whiff from the toilets can be a bit off-putting if you're sat in the wrong spot. Plus, it might sting your wallet a little more than expected for a casual night out. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone in Muswell Hill looking for a reliable spot to unwind, as long as you go in with your eyes open to the occasional flaw – trust me, the good bits far outweigh the bad!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is consistently good and freshly made, with options for everything from relaxed lunches to sumptuous Sunday roasts that hit the spot.
  • They've got a lovely outside area that's tucked away and feels secluded, even though it's right on the street – perfect for a sunny afternoon pint.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it a great spot for a casual get-together, and it's super clean and spotless inside.
  • It's dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out with your furry friend, and the drinks menu is diverse with some cracking choices like IPAs.
  • The staff are lovely and attentive, adding to that cosy, relaxing vibe that makes you want to linger.
Cons
  • There can be occasional slip-ups with the food, like the gravy not being quite right in some dishes, which might leave you a bit disappointed.
  • Sometimes there's an unpleasant smell from the toilets that can waft through, putting a damper on things even if they're not nearby.
  • It can feel a tad pricey for what you get, especially if you're just popping in for a quick drink or a burger, so it might not suit every budget.

It’s our local, we go quite often usually for a meal and drinks. Has nice outside area. Next to street but feels secluded. Consistently good food. Recommend!

Got it! Here’s the revised version with those fixes: Rating: ★★★☆☆ Visited for a Sunday roast at 5pm. Some aspects were enjoyable — the gravy was tasty, though in the wine-based gravy, the reduction wasn’t done correctly. The veggies were nicely toasted, and the Rioja wine was good. The interior is beautiful and staff were attentive. However, there were quite a few letdowns. The roast potatoes were dried out — felt like they’d been sitting under a heat lamp all day. One of the chicken portions was probably the driest I’ve ever had. Beef and lamb were served without asking for preferred doneness, which really affects the experience. Some parts of the roast even came out cold. Classic cocktails, pricing was fair, and the tables are quite small. Also, there was no lock on the toilet door — not ideal. Overall, it’s disappointing to be served dry or reheated food at this hour, should be fresh. A 3-star rating reflects a mixed experience with room for improvement.

After venturing down the hill, in the cold weather from Ally Pally. We came in here for a nice pub vibe. The server was lovely and found us a table. Unfortunately, suddenly upon sitting down. The stench of a male urinal hit our nostrils. The toilets were way over the other side of the pub. I had a quick visual inspection and spotted a gentleman in his 70s, maybe asleep on the table next to us. Alone and possibly more than inebriated, I alerted the staff and asked for a different table. We were moved, and the gentleman was checked over, and he left. Two points here, staff were great with us but also kind and concerned about this man. Which you don't often see. The pub itself was busy and vibrant, but quiet enough, you could enjoy a conversation. The food was great, and there was a nice choice on the menu.

A spontaneous visit having seen the pub from over the road. Blown away by the visuals of the pub. It's clearly had a lot of love put into the appearance and the place was spotless on the inside. Ended up having a couple of pints from the IPA selection and the burger. A little on the pricey side for me but in terms of quality of food and service I can't fault it. Looking forward to coming back! Edit: Came back and it was just as good!!
