About This Pub

Ah, The Magdalen Arms – it's one of those places that really warms you up on a chilly Oxford evening, isn't it? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food is mostly a delight; think hearty sharing plates like that lamb shoulder that's so generous you'll have leftovers for the next day. The staff are absolute gems, always up for a friendly chat, and the wine selection is spot on without breaking the bank. It's brilliant for popping in with the family or even your furry friend, as long as they're on their best behaviour. They've got that pub shop too, with tempting bits like focaccia and olive oils to take home. On the downside, it's a shame when things like the risotto or fish and chips don't quite hit the spot – some have said it's underwhelming and not worth the cost. Overall, though, with its lively atmosphere and solid offerings, it's a solid choice for a night out, but maybe stick to the crowd-pleasers to avoid any surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally outstanding, with highlights like the lamb shoulder that's perfect for sharing and leaves you with plenty to take home.
  • Friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere make it a lovely spot for a relaxed meal or catch-up with friends.
  • They've got a decent wine list with fair prices, adding to the overall enjoyment of a visit.
  • It's family-friendly and even welcomes well-behaved dogs, plus they have options for outdoor seating when the weather's on your side.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit disappointing, like the risotto or fish and chips, which didn't live up to expectations for a few folks.
  • It can feel a tad pricey for the quality at times, so you might want to keep an eye on the bill.
  • The menu's a bit ambitious with its Spanish influences, which means not every course hits the mark for everyone.

Far too expensive for the quality it provides. I've order some risotto, because how can one mess up rice? This looked and smelled so bad it was untastable. And I know it's a pub... so I'll say it - their fish and chips was the worst I've ever had also. Do not recommend it.

Exceptional food, great pub. We (4) shared the lamb shoulder and still had loads to take home

After fangirling over the beautiful food at the Canton Arms in Stockwell, I had their sister pub in Oxford marked on my maps. As part of a road trip we stopped at The Magdalen Arms for lunch and how wonderful it was. The menu concept is the same as that of their London pubs; authentic international/mediterranean classics executed very well. This time we went for the Sicilian style polpette in dandelion broth and then we had the Provençal fish stew accompanied by the house focaccia. Both dishes were divine, made with fresh seasonal produce and the fish was cooked to perfection. A must when in Oxford and when you’re looking for a traditional English pub but with fabulous food that goes way beyond the standard beige offering. What a lovely Gastropub with welcoming, attentive staff.

This is a lovely pub with a very nice ambience, great atmosphere and friendly staff. The food menu is ambitiously spanish, hence the gastropub status, but perhaps a little bit too ambitious. Me and my friends all had a few different courses (I had the Rabbit and chorizo). No complaints but the courses we had didn’t really come to live. But it’s a nice place and definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby. - Value for money? Yes - Worth a detour? No - Best for (occasion)? A few pints - Would I go back? Yes
