About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about The Lych Gate Tavern – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local hideaway in the heart of Wolverhampton, tucked away near the church with that inviting, old-school charm. From what I've gathered from folks' thoughts, the ale selection is where it truly shines; they've got a whopping 13 pumps dishing out some cracking real ales, including stouts and ciders, and it's picked up some well-deserved awards, so if you're into your brews, you'll be in heaven. The atmosphere is spot on too – imagine sinking into a spot by the log fire on a chilly evening, or nipping out to the garden for a smoke or a bit of fresh air, all while catching the latest on Sky Sports. It's thoughtfully set up for everyone, with wheelchair access, a car park, and even allowing dogs and kids until 7pm, which makes it feel inclusive without being overwhelming. On the flip side, it does tend to be on the quieter side sometimes, even when you'd expect a bit more hustle on a weekend, so if you're craving a packed house with live music or a party vibe, it might not quite hit the mark. Still, for a solid, no-fuss pint and a good natter with mates, it's a winner – honest, it's got that balance of tradition and comfort that keeps you coming back.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The ale selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of real ales on offer – it's won awards like the Wolverhampton CAMRA City Pub of the Year, so you know you're in for a treat if you're a beer enthusiast.
  • It's got that cosy, traditional pub vibe with a log fire, outdoor garden, and even a function room, making it perfect for a relaxed catch-up or a bit of telly with Sky Sports.
  • Super accessible and welcoming – wheelchair friendly, dog-friendly, and right near the bus routes and railway, plus they've got parking and allow kids until 7pm, which is handy for a family outing early doors.
Cons
  • It can feel a bit quiet at times, even on a Friday night in the city centre, which might not suit if you're after a buzzing, lively crowd.
  • With its traditional setup, it might not appeal to those seeking a more modern or flashy bar experience, as it's all about that classic pub charm.

Great atmosphere and ale selection. Lovely little gem tucked away in Wolverhampton.

After a drink in the Great Western I moved onto the Lychgate Tavern in centre of the city. Even though this is more central it was still not overly busy, especially considering this was 8 pm on a Friday night. Sadly a sign of the times. I had a pint of BFG which I was informed is there most popular real ale. It is a light, not so heavy ale, brewed by Black Country Ales , which suited the very warm evening. There was a good selection of ales, mostly from BCA, who owns the pub. It is a nce, friendly, including dogs, cosy pub, with well kept ales and nice filled cobs if you feel hungry. Definitely recommended

Is this the best pub in Wolvo for real ale drinkers. Think 9 pumps on one had gone. Luckilly these update Real Ale Finder, albeit may be 4 days out was glad to see what could be described as packed almost solid pre 10pm. First off Attic Brewing Midnight followed by a real gem Magpie Brewing Ten For Bliss awesome. Its a place i would be happy to go up town on my own and venture in. Staff seem great along with the clientel it attracts, whats not to like plus they dont take the p on prices. This will be a regular in future 5 mile away over the local GK pub 150 yards away.

Three pubs into Albrecht's visit to Wolverhampton and another gem. Beautiful setting by the Church ( Lych Gates being where the coffin waited before the service.) The lovely one room bar is down the stairs. There is a functiion roon upwards along with toilets. A lift takes you up and down if needed. Great real ale selection. 9 beers and a cider. First ever pint from Somerset brewery Nuttycombe. Excellent. Super Cobs on sale, seems to be a Black Country norm. ( butties, sandwiches, baps, buns etc..great ..why don't all pubs do this?) Albrecht happy as a pig in poo!

Well worth checking this pub out - just up from the Posada on the right. 10 cask ales on including cider, stout & porter. The usual high standards you come to expect from all Black Country Ales outlets.
