About This Pub
Ah, The Lock – it's one of those spots that really pulls you in with its prime position overlooking the marina, where you can sit back with a drink and soak up the scenery. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, the food can be a highlight, with dishes like fish and chips and lasagne getting high praise for being fresh and flavoursome, and the vibe is just so easy-going, whether you're grabbing a coffee and cake or a full meal. The staff often get a thumbs up for being warm and on point, adding to that homely feel. But, let's be straight, it's not all smooth sailing – there've been tales of dodgy service, like waiting around for a table or finding key items missing from the menu, and that one nightmare story about bad food making someone ill is enough to give you pause. Still, with a solid reputation overall, I'd say it's worth popping in if you're nearby, just maybe keep your expectations in check and go on a good day.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The location is absolutely stunning, right by the marina with gorgeous views over the yachts – perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
-
They serve some cracking food options, like the fish and chips that's been raved about as being on another level, and even lasagne that's described as divine.
-
The atmosphere is so chilled and welcoming, with stylish decor inside and lovely outdoor seating areas that make you feel right at home.
-
Staff are generally spot on, being attentive and friendly without being over the top – a real plus for a laid-back visit.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit unreliable at times, like when tables aren't ready on arrival or they're out of stock on half the menu, which puts a dampener on things.
-
Food quality isn't always consistent; one experience was truly awful, with reports of the worst fish and chips leading to food poisoning – that's a proper worry.
-
The specials menu might come across as a bit underwhelming, described as small and crumpled, which doesn't quite live up to the rest of the place.

Upon our arrival our table was not ready, the customer service was crap. They were out of stock of half the things on the menu. I got the fish and chips. Honestly the worst fish and chips I’ve ever eaten. Within half an hour I was being sick and experiencing many symptoms of FOOD POISONING . I went to the doctors two days later for them to confirm that I did indeed have FOOD POISONING . This place used to be amazing and it’s honestly one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. I never write reviews but I had to say something on this occasion because of how ill I am
Wow lived in sheilds 13 years and first time at the lock the fish and chips were on another level , the mrs even ate the lot they were that good, daughter said her lasagne was devine, the atmosphere was so relaxed ,staff attentiveness was first class not overbearing ,Deano was fabulous and as an added bonus we now know we can take our dog in with us, can't fault the whole evening exceptional find we will be trying a breckfast very very soon
We were looking forward to visiting here today after my partner was there with friends a few months ago. The location and views across the marina are beautiful!
Sadly the food wasn’t…
We were provided with a small specials menu on a crumpled A5 piece of paper and a nicely presented larger menu.
After being seated in a hot corner in full sun we decided on what we wanted and placed the order. A few minutes later the waitress came back saying they didn’t have any sea bass. Second attempt was smoked salmon and king prawn skewers. Same again, they didn’t have any of those either. My partner settled for a southern fried chicken burger.
When our meals arrived we started to eat however, the southern fried chicken in both my pizza wrap and the burger was over cooked, the burger bun was stale!
My partner brought this up to the waitress when we decided to pay and leave. She was given 10% discount but I’m afraid other than returning for a coffee, maybe… we will not be returning for food.
This is a prime location however the food does not reflect this! The staff appeared under pressure and when we left one of the staff was wandering around the outdoor seating with two salads shouting out names. Come on the lock!! Open some windows and doors, offer outdoor seating when booking, especially on hot days, get a chef that can spot a stale bread bun and organise the staffing levels to ensure happier staff and suit/cater for warmer days and more customers!
Went for light lunch and it didn't disappoint! Lush setting on the marina overlooking all the yachts. Lovely outside seating areas. Inside is decorative and stylish. The menu is varied offering coffee n cake - tapas - full blown meals - good value wine selection too! A lovely spot and walking distance from the north shields fish quay!! Will be back with friends soon. Free parking if you put your registration in the pad at the entrance.
Wonderful place! Love the decoration and how well the staff are trained!
Excellent customer service.
Lovely presentation of the food and the quality was great.
We were very lucky to pop in for a delicious bunch and we took home two yummy muffins for the journey home.
I couldn’t finished my avocado toast so I took it for the journey.
Well done for using recycled material on the take away containers
