About This Pub

Ah, The Kittiwake – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Whitley Bay, you know? I've heard from folks who've popped in that the Sunday roasts are brilliant, with all the classics done just right and even gluten-free options, which is a nice touch if you're watching what you eat. The service can be really welcoming, making you feel like you're among mates, and the beers and snacks like those crispy potato skins are spot on without breaking the bank. On the flip side, it's a tad hidden away in a housing estate, so you might have to hunt for it a bit, and if it's a match day or things get lively, waits can drag on due to staffing issues, as one person shared they were left hanging. Overall, it's worth a visit for the good grub and atmosphere, but maybe plan ahead to avoid any hiccups – it's all about that balance of enjoying the highs and steering clear of the lows when you're out for a pint or a meal with friends.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Sunday lunches are an absolute treat – classic favourites with a modern twist, all gluten-free, made with fresh ingredients and loads of love, perfect for a relaxed meal.
  • Friendly and welcoming service that makes you feel right at home, like popping in for a quick drink and ending up chatting away.
  • A solid selection of beers and pub grub with plenty of flavour, served on hot plates, and pints at a reasonable £4-5, which is great value.
  • It's a nice local spot with a relaxed vibe, where you can catch live sports and even have a chat with the regulars – feels community-oriented.
Cons
  • It can be a bit tricky to find, tucked away in a housing estate, so you might end up wandering around before you spot it.
  • There have been times when it's understaffed, leading to long waits, especially during busy events like match days, which can put a damper on things.
  • One or two experiences mentioned disappointing service, like not being served promptly, so it might not always hit the mark if it's heaving.

First time we have eaten here, we really appreciated the no nonsense menu, good pub food, plenty of flavour served on hot plates. We will be back

We came in tonight for a last minute drink . This was no bother at all for Charlie . We were not rushed at all , and felt so welcome . Amazing service and a warm welcome

I nice local pub. Got chatting with a couple of the locals while there and people generally seemed quite civilised overall. Had the potato skins as a bar snack, they were nice and crispy with. A good dip. Pints weren't crazy expensive, around £4-5. Watch out for the spirits, some tequila shouts are £9.00 per single. I tried to haggle but they weren't having it. Decor is all good seems recently refurbished in the last few years, toilets could do with a refurb though, but not too bad.

Stumbled over this place whilst in Whitley bay and wanted Sunday Lunch, in the middle of a housing estate so hard to find and I was a bit reluctant as it looked like a beer drinkers pub only. How I was wrong, one of the best Sunday lunches I have had in a long time. Service was great and we all left happy, we have made a space in the Callander to go once a month

I never really give reviews but felt I had to as I have never been as disappointed as I was on Sunday We booked a table for Sunday lunch at 3pm. The pub was starting to get busy due to the match being on TV but there was an obvious massive lack of staff meaning a long wait to get served We ordered our food and waited over an hour for the food to come and then to be told there was no roast potatoes left and asked how they can compensate this which we requested for additional meat which obviously fell on deaf ears. The meat was more than well done (belly pork) The gravy was like water Very disappointing
