About This Pub

Ah, The Kings Head, what a gem in the heart of Crouch End! From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got that perfect mix of traditional pub charm and a bit of creative flair, making it a go-to for everything from a casual midweek meal to a buzzing comedy night. The food really stands out – I'm talking mouthwatering burgers and fresh specials that won't set you back too much, paired with a solid drinks selection that keeps things interesting without being pretentious. The staff are an absolute delight, always on hand with a smile and efficient service that makes you feel looked after. It's family-friendly too, which is lovely if you're out with the little ones or even your furry friend. On the flip side, it does get packed at times, so if you're seeking a peaceful corner, you might have to time your visit just right. And while it's not right on a tube stop, that walk through the leafy streets adds to the charm, though it could be a minor hassle on a rainy evening. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good night out – I'd say give it a try if you're in the area, as the positives far outweigh any small niggles.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely brilliant – it's warm, welcoming, and full of that quirky charm that makes you feel right at home, especially with its history and creative vibe in Crouch End.
  • The food is top-notch; think delicious burgers, fried chicken, pies, and seasonal specials that are reasonably priced and hit the spot every time.
  • Service is spot on – the bar staff are quick, friendly, and go the extra mile, whether you're popping in for a drink or hosting an event.
  • It's a fantastic spot for all sorts of occasions, from laid-back lunches and family dinners to lively comedy nights and parties, and it's even welcoming to dogs and kids.
  • With its explorative drinks menu and unpretentious feel, it's perfect for a memorable evening without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • It can get a bit crowded on busier nights, which might make it feel a tad overwhelming if you're after a quiet pint.
  • The location's a short walk from the nearest station, so if you're not local, it might not be the most convenient spot after a long day.
  • While the hours are generally flexible, there might be some confusion with closing times, as it varies by day, potentially catching you out if you're planning a late one.

We came for the comedy night last week and had an amazing night. The atmosphere when we walked in was great, enough tables and even for those standing it didn’t feel cramped. The service of the bar staff was quick and friendly at all points during the evening. The comedy room itself is intimate and homely making it great for couples or groups depending on preference of involvement. Loved our evening here!

We hired Downstairs @The Kings Head for a birthday party - and it was phenomenal. The staff - special thanks to Morgan, Koti and Teri - were great. Ever helpful and friendly, they made both the planning and the night itself easy and stress-free. Fantastic venue - we had the coolest party in town!

One of my favourite local pubs. I can’t stress enough how fantastic the food is here. The prices are reasonable and overall the pub has a very relaxed and unpretentious vibe. The burgers, fried chicken and pies are all great, but so are their changing specials. The hake was some of the best fish I’ve had in any restaurant in a long time. Even better than Lyons round the corner. I enjoy it so much we ended up booking for Christmas Day - something I’ve never done. The Christmas meal was lovely and the staff were excellent as always. To top it off, the jazz downstairs every Sunday afternoon is a jewel and a much needed tradition. I find myself popping in fairly often for lunch in the week now. I find the other pubs in Crouch End a lot busier, more expensive and fussy, but I honestly think The Kings Head is slept on. People don’t know what they’re missing.

🚇 Hornsey 🍺 £6.10 Pravha The Kings Head is located on the corner of a parade of shops in the heart of Crouch End. The nearest station is Hornsey, it’s a fifteen minute walk to get here. There has been a pub in on this site since 1662. In the 19th century the pub was informally known as “The Yard of Pork”. Prior to 1812 the pub was called The White Hart. The majestic turreted pub you see today was built for Taylor Walker in 1892. In the basement of The Kings Head is the home to one of the oldest comedy clubs in Britain. “Downstairs at the Kings Head” was founded in 1981, comedians like Alexei Sayle, Lee Mack, Ed Byrne, Rob Beckett and Jimmy Carr have all graced the stage here. This is a stylish one bar pub with a contemporary feel. The servery is located on the left hand side and has modern lighting above the counter. On one wall is a decorative collage of music, TV and film stars, on another is a collection of photos of comedians who have performed here. There is plenty seating throughout with traditional tables and chairs, curved banquettes and a couple of sofas. At the back of the bar is the stairs down to the basement Comedy Club. The beer line up will please most with a selection of cask, London craft and mainstream beers to choose from. I decided on a pint of Pravha, my pint was great, price point was average. There is a classic pub grub menu available, Fish & Chips costs £17. We arrived around 1.30pm on a Sunny Saturday lunchtime in August. The pub was fairly quiet with a few locals and a couple with their pooch in attendance. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was easy to settle in. The service was ok, the welcome was pleasant enough. As well as hosting comedy nights there is also Jazz on a Sunday and a weekly quiz. Lots of history and celebrity is associated with @thekingsheadn8 . Our visit was good, I loved the architecture of this imposing pub and especially the portrait of Bill Murray. Our beers were on point and not overly priced, the vibe laidback and relaxed. This pub is worth a look if you’re in the area. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 17.08.24
