About This Pub

You know, when you step into the Maynard Arms, it's got this warm, inviting feel that just makes you want to settle in for the evening – think historic pub vibes from 1851 mixed with comfy modern touches that make it feel fresh and welcoming. The food really steals the show; I've heard from folks that the Sunday roast is an absolute winner, with tender, juicy chicken and hearty portions that leave you satisfied, while things like the dry-aged burger and those Wing Wednesday deals sound like they'd hit the spot every time. And let's not forget the staff – they're so attentive and helpful, like Shanks who seems to go the extra mile with great recommendations and a genuine chat, making the whole experience feel personal. It's brilliant for families or if you're out with your dog, and that beer garden is a lovely spot for soaking up the sun with a cold one. On the flip side, it does look like it might be shut right now, which is a shame, and the prices are on the moderate side, so it might not be ideal for a budget night out. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for a proper pub meal and a catch-up with mates – I'd say give it a go when it's back up and running.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is simply brilliant, with standout dishes like the Sunday roast and burgers that are packed with flavour and generous portions.
  • Staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome – Shanks, in particular, is a real gem for his attentive service and spot-on recommendations.
  • It's got that lovely historic charm from its 1851 roots, blended with cosy, modern comforts like Chesterfield sofas and a relaxed vibe.
  • Being dog-friendly and family-oriented makes it a welcoming spot for a laid-back get-together with friends or loved ones.
  • The spacious beer garden is perfect for al fresco dining and drinks on a sunny day, adding to the overall appeal.
Cons
  • It seems like it might be closed at the moment, which is a bit of a letdown if you're hoping for a spontaneous visit.
  • With its moderate pricing, it could feel a tad pricey for just a quick pint, especially if you're watching the pennies.

Hands down the best Sunday roast in the area! The portion was generous and full of flavour. I tried the chicken roast, and it was cooked perfectly—tender, juicy, and delicious. The vegetarian roast looked great as well, with a hearty and well-presented plate. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a satisfying and well-prepared Sunday meal!

Food was 10/10 the dry aged burger was one of the best I’ve ever had. Our waiter Shanks was AMAZING! He was attentive, patient and gave us great recommendations on food and drinks. He is a great asset to this establishment. I visited from west London for an event nearby and now I know this place is here, I will 100% be back!

SHANKS IS THE BEST SERVER EVER! He advised us what’s best on the menu, ensure all our drinks were made to perfection, and was just an overall kind, fantastic human being. He made our evening here a fabulous experience. One member of our table was gluten free and he advised what would be suitable which was very thoughtful as well as recommending what food was best. We had the steak, fish and chips, fried chicken, Camembert - everything was just as good as Shanks said it would be! We were a group of 10 friends here and we all absolutely loved him. He deserves a raise/promotion/everything his heart desires because he made our visit! Would return again JUST FOR HIM!

🚇 Hornsey 🍺 £6.75 Estrella Galicia This pub is located just up the road from the Clock Tower in Crouch End, North London. The nearest station is Hornsey. The Maynard Arms was built by developers Joshua Alexander and William Bradshaw in 1851. The Maynard name comes from Stephen Maynard of Islington who was Lord of the Manor of Topsfield in 1356. This large, modern Gastropub has quite the contemporary feel. Upon entering, the servery is on the right, illuminated by industrial pendants. The spacious main bar area wraps around the servery, with a corner banquette to the right and an elevated section to the left. Further inside, there is a dining area with varied seating. The decor includes boarded floors, mixed painted and exposed brick walls, black and white prints, and ample seating. A good-sized beer garden with pergolas is at the rear, and a few benches at the front offer street views. The beer selection was impressive, boasting a good mix of premium and local beers, along with three cask ales. I opted for an Estrella Galicia, my pint hit the spot; price point was as expected. The food menu features classic British pub fare, offering both comfort food options and slightly more elevated dishes. Fish & Chips costs £18, and roasts are available on Sundays. We arrived just after 3pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon in August. The pub was quiet inside, as the majority of punters were outside enjoying the summer sun. There was a upbeat buzz in the beer garden and a chilled, laid-back atmosphere around the bar inside. The service was pleasant; the team on duty were welcoming and courteous. Sometimes walking into a gastropub can feel a bit intimidating when all you want is a pint, and every table is set with a full array of cutlery – but not here. We enjoyed our visit to @themaynardarms; the pub has a nice local feel, and the environment was comfortable. The beer selection will please a wide range of tastes, and you're in the right place if you're after some decent grub. This pub is worth checking out if you're in the area. 📅 17th August 2024 More London pub info on socials @londonpubmap 🍻
