About This Pub

Ah, The John Hewitt – it's one of those places that just warms you up from the get-go. Tucked away in the heart of Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, it's all about that genuine community spirit, with live music and arts events that make it feel like more than just a spot for a pint. The beer selection is top-notch, boasting 16 taps with brews that'll please any fan, and the staff are an absolute delight, always ready with a friendly word or recommendation. On the food side, things like the lasagna and mozzarella sticks are getting high praise for being hearty and delicious, though it's clear they're still building out options with plans for a food truck down the line. That said, it can sometimes lack that full-on buzz, feeling a tad subdued on quieter days, and with it being closed one day a week, you might need to plan ahead. Overall, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening – ideal if you're after good company and a well-poured drink, but maybe not the spot for a wild night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with 16 taps offering something for everyone and a real focus on quality brews.
  • Staff are lovely and welcoming, always up for a chat and making you feel right at home.
  • It's got a brilliant community vibe, supporting live music and the arts, which makes it a proper hub for good times.
  • Food hits the mark with tasty options like lasagna and mozzarella sticks – proper comfort grub that leaves you smiling.
  • Great spot in Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, with an outdoor area for enjoying a pint in the fresh air.
Cons
  • It can feel a bit quiet at times, not always buzzing with energy, which might disappoint if you're after a lively crowd.
  • Food choices are limited for now, though they're planning to add a food truck, so it might not satisfy everyone straight away.
  • It's closed one day a week, which could be a nuisance if you're set on popping in spontaneously.

Visited a few weeks ago after arriving in Belfast! Wonderful beer, food, atmosphere, and music! Servers were awesome! For clarification purposes, the spend amount had to do with me drinking many pints that fine Sunday afternoon!

An old bar for those used to living in this old town. Feels as local as you can get and full of all ages . Never truly packed to the gills. Nice boundary beer. 🍺 You can drink outside in the open air out the back too.
