About This Pub
Ah, The Head of Steam in Liverpool, what a lovely little find it is! I've got to say, if you're popping into the city for a wander around Liverpool One or catching a show nearby, this place is spot on for a proper pint and a bite. The beer selection is just top drawer; they've got all these amazing local brews and even some from further afield that really hit the mark, making it a must-visit for anyone who appreciates a good ale. Pair that with some seriously tasty food – their burgers are an absolute treat, and it's great to see vegan options on the menu too – and you've got yourself a winner. The staff are always up for a chat, which makes the whole experience feel warm and inviting, like you're catching up with mates. On the flip side, it does get heaving at times, so you might find yourself jostling for space, and the prices are a bit middling, which could nip at your wallet if you're not careful. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed afternoon or evening out, with just enough buzz to keep things interesting without overwhelming you. If you're heading that way, I'd definitely recommend giving it a go – you won't be disappointed!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely brilliant, with a fantastic range of local craft ales, real beers from around the world, and even some cracking cocktails to mix things up.
-
The food hits the spot every time – think juicy burgers, tasty pizzas, and options for vegans, all at a fair price that won't break the bank.
-
It's in a prime spot near Liverpool One and Concert Square, making it ideal for a quick break from shopping or a pre-gig pint.
-
The staff are always so welcoming and friendly, adding to that relaxed, homely vibe that makes you want to linger.
-
They've got live sport on the telly, pool tables, and even a photo booth for a bit of fun – perfect for a casual get-together.
Cons
-
It can get pretty busy, especially on weekends or during big events, so you might have to queue for a table or deal with a bit of a crowd.
-
The moderate prices mean it's not the cheapest spot in town, which could add up if you're planning a long session.
-
Opening hours are fairly standard, but if you're after a late-night haunt, it might close a tad early for some tastes.

The Head of Steam in Liverpool is a fantastic spot for anyone who enjoys quality beer in a relaxed, stylish setting. Located just a short walk from Lime Street Station, it’s the perfect place to unwind after work or start a night out.
The beer selection is the main attraction here. They offer an impressive and regularly rotating range of craft beers, real ales, and international brews. Whether you’re into bold IPAs, smooth stouts, fruity sours, or crisp lagers, you’ll find something that suits your taste. I tried a local pale ale and a German pilsner—both were fresh, full of flavour, and expertly poured.
What really stood out was the knowledge and friendliness of the staff. They’re more than happy to guide you through the menu or offer a taster before you commit. The bar also has a warm, modern interior with industrial touches, giving it a welcoming yet contemporary feel.
With great beer, helpful staff, and a buzzing but comfortable atmosphere, The Head of Steam is a must-visit for beer lovers in Liverpool. Whether you’re a seasoned craft drinker or just curious to try something new, this place won’t disappoint.
Excellent selection of ales and cans from great breweries like Vault City, Vocation and Brew York (as well as my fave lager Jubel!). Good selection go cask ales too. Also, one of the nicest burgers I've ever had, the double bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries was delicious. Was asked if we had any food allergies (we didn't) but most places don't even ask so it stood out that the staff asked.
Really cool idea as well to have the drinks menu on a large TV with Untapped reviews updated live.
Huge improvement from last year when the ales always tasted funny. Highly recommend especially as there seems to be new staff and management.
Great pub that was the only one that allowed an U18 inside compared to 3 other city centre pubs
Had lovely lunch here today. Food portions of good size and value for money. Pool tables, sports on tv and decent bar and service.
Came here for a couple of drinks and really enjoyed it.
The staff were really friendly.
They serve delirium red Belgium beer, which is delicious and packs a punch! A pint of that and you'll be feeling nice and happy!
They have a nice selection of beers, wines and spirits, and the pricing is fair given the central location.
It's a really nice bar, decorated well, and feels cosy, especially in the train style booths in the back.
Definitely recommend coming here if you're in the area and looking for a place for a couple of nice drinks!
