About This Pub
Ah, The Hatchet Inn – it's one of those classic spots that really captures the heart of what makes a good British pub so special. From the moment you step inside, you're enveloped in its storied past, with legends of Blackbeard and all sorts of local history making it a brilliant place for a chat over a pint. The food's a standout too; I've heard loads of praise for the generous portions of traditional fare like steak pies and pub classics that hit the spot without costing a fortune. And let's not forget the drinks – a cracking range of ales and beers that could keep any fan happy for hours. On the flip side, it does tend to fill up quickly, which can lead to queues and service that's a bit all over the place when things get hectic, and not every dish is a home run, like those burgers that some mates have mentioned falling a tad flat. All in all, it's a welcoming haunt that's worth a visit for its atmosphere and offerings, but keep in mind to time your trip right for the best experience – you'll likely have a top night if you do!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic charm is absolutely spot on – it's the oldest pub in Bristol with fascinating tales like Blackbeard popping in, making every visit feel like a step back in time.
-
The food is a real winner; think generous portions of hearty pub grub like delicious steak pies and great value meals that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, including award-winning ales and a variety of beers, lagers, and spirits that'll please any ale enthusiast.
-
The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates, and the staff are generally friendly and know their stuff about the brews.
Cons
-
It can get pretty packed, especially in the evenings, which means long queues for drinks and a bit of a wait that might disrupt the flow of your night out.
-
Service can be a tad chaotic during busy times, like when everyone's rushing for a round, so it might not always be as smooth as you'd hope.
-
Some dishes, like the burgers, haven't lived up to expectations for a few folks, coming across as a bit underwhelming despite the rest of the menu shining.
-
If you pop in at an off-peak time, it might feel a smidge quiet or not quite buzzing, which could affect that lively pub vibe you're after.

Very cool historic pub, quite cosy inside! The food was great and the portions generous - the steak pie was delicious. Service was a little chaotic at the beginning (huge queue to get drinks) but mellowed out after a while.
The Hatchet Inn is the oldest pub in Bristol still open. It's interior boasts of the local history, including cockfighting in the 18th century and bare knuckle fighting in the 19th century. There is also the local legend that Blackbeard himself is said to have stepped foot inside during the 17th century, although what evidence for the claim I have yet to see.
Regardless, the 17th century pub has a cozy and historic atmosphere that I quite enjoyed.
I ordered a Steak and Ale pie, which was warm, hearty, and fulfilling in both appetite and flavour. The pastry of the pie was flaky, and the meat hot and tender. The meal was presented in a simple and neat manner, ensuring that tackling the meal could be handled in an efficient manner.
Service was polite, friendly and helpful.
The oldest pub in Bristol. Where blackbeard himself drank. Was nice to be a small part of the history. The place is cozy but gets packed very quickly. Lots of variety of beers and liquors on offer. Didn't try the food so can't comment. Would definitely come back.

Great pub in the heart of Bristol. If you want good pub grub head here! Great value and big portions. My friend enjoyed eating her topped chips with her talons.
My partner and I were looking for a good old fashioned pub to eat at and visit prior to leaving for the states. The atmosphere was just what we were looking for. We did go at an awkward time as people were not off work yet. The burgers were a little disappointing as they did not have grill marks but were somehow overcooked. The fries though were spot on—very delicious. We no longer drink alcohol, but the zero proof was super tasty.
