About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Hare & Hounds – it's one of those places that just wraps you up in that classic British pub charm right from the off. I love how the staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, with their friendly chats and efficient service that really sets the tone for a great night. The food's another winner; their Sunday roasts are spot on, and the seasonal menus feel fresh and exciting, like tucking into some tangy rhubarb or crisp asparagus that screams springtime. Plus, if you're looking for a place to crash, the rooms are clean and thoughtfully done, giving you that homely feel without any fuss. On the flip side, though, while the recent buzz is all positive, the general rating hints that things aren't perfect every time – maybe a off day with the service or the grub not quite hitting the mark for some. And let's be honest, without clear opening times, it can leave you scratching your head about when to drop by. All in all, it's a solid choice for a pint and a bite in Newbury, but I'd say it's best for those laid-back evenings rather than anything too fancy.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The rooms are spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated, offering a cosy home-from-home vibe if you're staying over.
  • The food is a real highlight – think delicious Sunday roasts and fresh seasonal menus that capture the essence of spring with things like asparagus and rhubarb.
  • It's got a warm, inviting atmosphere with equestrian-themed decor that adds a touch of character, perfect for a relaxed chat over drinks.
  • Plenty of parking and a great selection of premium drinks, including wines, craft beers, and spirits, make it easy to pop in for a quick pint or a longer evening.
Cons
  • The overall rating suggests that while recent feedback is glowing, there might be occasional slip-ups in service or consistency that aren't captured in the latest reviews.
  • Without specific operating hours listed, it can be a bit tricky to plan a visit, especially if you're hoping to catch them on a quieter day.
  • Some might find the food just standard pub fare rather than something truly standout, so if you're after fine dining, it could fall a tad short.
  • As a pub with hotel elements, it might feel a bit all over the place if you're just there for a drink and not keen on the full experience.

My husband and I recently stayed stayed here for one night and really enjoyed our experience! Our room was very clean and had everything we needed. The staff were very welcoming and allowed us to check-in an hour early. We also had enjoyed dinner here as well and the food was wonderful. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent! We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend!

A Unique and Charming Stay at the Hare and Hounds Hotel The Hare and Hounds Hotel offers a truly delightful and unique experience. What immediately struck me was the clever conversion of former stables into individual bedrooms. This thoughtful design provides a sense of character and privacy that you don't often find. Each room exudes a rustic charm while still offering all the necessary modern comforts for a relaxing stay. Beyond the distinctive accommodation, the food at the Hare and Hounds is truly excellent. Every dish I sampled was clearly prepared with care and high-quality ingredients, leaving a lasting positive impression. Whether you're dining in their restaurant or enjoying a bite in their beautiful beer garden, you're in for a treat. Speaking of the beer garden, it's a real highlight. This tranquil space is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring or simply to enjoy a drink on a pleasant evening. Its beauty adds another layer of appeal to this already wonderful hotel. If you're looking for a hotel with character, delicious food, and a lovely outdoor space in Newbury, the Hare and Hounds Hotel comes highly recommended. It offers a memorable and enjoyable stay that stands out from the more conventional options.
