About This Pub

Ah, The Castle in Newbury – what a gem it is, isn't it? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really nails the whole pub experience with a Mediterranean flair that transports you straight to the sunny shores of Greece. The food stands out as a real highlight; it's all about those homemade, authentic Greek dishes packed with bold flavours and hearty portions that leave you feeling properly chuffed. Pair that with the super-friendly staff who are always on hand without being over the top, and you've got a welcoming spot that's just perfect for catching up with friends or bringing the family along for a bite in the beer garden. The spacious setup means you won't feel crammed in, which is a nice change from some busier pubs, and it's kept spotlessly clean too. On the flip side, though, it's not all sunshine and souvlaki – I've heard a few mentions of waits for the food, which might put a dampener on things if you're peckish and in a rush. Plus, some folks find the portions a bit too generous, like with the salads, and it can edge towards the expensive side if you're not careful with your choices. All in all, it's a cracking place with more ups than downs, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after good grub and a laid-back vibe in Newbury – just go in with realistic expectations and you'll have a whale of a time.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Friendly and attentive staff who make you feel right at home, with quick service and a welcoming vibe that's perfect for families or groups.
  • It's got a lovely spacious layout with comfortable seating, including a nice beer garden that's ideal for sunny days and keeping little ones entertained.

  • Prices are generally reasonable, especially with options like set menus, and there's plenty of parking to make getting there a breeze.
Cons
  • Sometimes the food takes a bit longer to arrive, which can be a tad frustrating if you're in a hurry.
  • Portions can be overwhelming for some dishes, like the salads, so you might end up with more than you bargained for.
  • It can feel a little on the pricey side, particularly if you're not opting for the deals, so keep an eye on the bill.

Good food and friendly service, food took a while to come out but it looked very impressive on arrival and well presented. Personally, the salad portion was overwhelming but I guess some like it that way. The meat was cooked to perfection. A little on the expensive side though as no starter or desert and it was over £40 with a couple of beers.

Came here for lunch on a whim. What a delight, great staff and sublime authentic Greek food. The sun was shining and we could easily have been in Cyprus, the Ionian or the Sporades. The food is home made, full of flavour and portion sizes that don't leave you feeling hungry. If I'm back this way in the future this will be my go to restaurant.

A corner of Greece in the middle of Berkshire. Great experience, perfect for families. Large portions of meat and veg dishes. Ample beer garden (ideal for groups with toddlers), staff very friendly. Services extremely clean! Highly recommend, we will come back.

Lovely spacious restaurant, it's rare not to feel packed in and it added much more comfort to the whole experience. Food was tasty, with some of the best fries I've ever had, crispy, salty and herby! Prices were as expected, especially for the dish sizes. Service was great, attentive, but not overbearing.

Excellent pub to eat or chill. Very well decorated and has a nice sofa corner to relax in. Good menu choices and friendly staff. Service was quick and food was top quality and reasonably priced. The set menu is good value. Plenty of parking, or if busy you can park over the road . Went there again recently, service and food still at good quality.
