About This Pub

Ah, The Gun Pub – it's one of those reliable locals in Pitsea that I've heard so many good things about from folks who've popped in. From what I've gathered, the staff really go the extra mile to make everyone feel welcome, whether you're just nipping in for a quick drink or settling in for a proper meal. The food sounds spot on, with hearty options that hit the spot, and they've got a wide range of drinks to suit all tastes. Plus, that function room is a gem for sorting out parties or get-togethers; it's accessible and even has a patio for stepping out, which is dead handy. On the downside, it seems like not everything's quite polished yet – a few reviews mentioned bits that weren't fully done, which might leave you wanting a tad more. And if you're eyeing it for a bigger do, the prices can mount up, so it's best to keep an eye on the budget. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening or a special occasion, especially if you're local to Essex, but it's worth weighing up those little imperfections against the warm atmosphere and great service.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They serve up delicious, wholesome pub food with a good mix of traditional and modern options, perfect for a satisfying meal.
  • It's got a relaxed and cosy atmosphere that's great for catching up with mates, families, or even business travellers.
  • The function room is a brilliant spot for private events like birthdays or gatherings, with easy access and outdoor areas for a breather.
  • With a solid 4.4 rating from plenty of visitors, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a good time overall.
Cons
  • Some areas, like the function rooms, might not be fully finished yet, which could put a slight dampener on things.
  • Events and larger bookings can get a bit pricey, so it's worth budgeting carefully if you're planning something special.
  • There might be the odd bit of background music or events happening that disrupt a peaceful pint, depending on the day.
  • It's not everyone's idea of a go-to local, as a couple of folks have noted it feels more like a handy stop rather than a favourite haunt.

Stopped in the quick pint while waiting for a bike to be fixed, had some party going on with music at 1pm on a fri which was interesting. Friendly staff and good vibe in bar area. Wouldn't call it my local but good watering hole non the less

We had the pleasure of hosting our twins 18th birthday meal in one of the beautifully presented function rooms at The Gun yesterday, it was a large group of 35 family and friends for a sit down meal, everybody said just how amazing the food was, all freshly prepared, the staff were amazing and attentive and could not do any more for us, a special thank you to Elizabeth for making it all run smoothly, her bar staff were equally brilliant! We can’t wait to return and are already planning on using them for the 21st party celebrations in the larger function room, well done to everyone who all make this venue an excellent place to host celebrations and thank you again!

My sister's 60th - secret to her - birthday party was held in the separate Jasmine Suite. This has its own entrance, bar and toilets. The wheelchair accessible entry is next to the car park. It also has a large patio area at the entrance - ideal for smokers/vapers or those wanting to enjoy some fresh air on a warm evening. The food selection was very good. As they knew it would be a mix of meat eaters and vegetarians they provided a great balance. Also done with style and imagination. In fact such a variety I can't remember it all.I can only say it was the best buffet I've seen and everyone enjoyed it.Plus plenty for all and some to take home too ! Judging by some other reviews with photos this must be the deluxe version. A very good space to celebrate or commemorate in.

We happened upon The Gun Public House by chance and were pleasantly surprised to discover their event rooms available for booking. The staff member who gave us a tour was polite, welcoming, and very informative about the venue. After making our booking, we needed to make a few changes, and once again, the staff were incredibly accommodating and helpful. The food was excellent, and the bar staff were friendly and attentive. We would highly recommend this venue for any event.

So I had my mum's wake here earlier today. I booked the newly refurbished 'Jasmine Lounge' at a cost of £300. In addition, the 'per person' buffet was £10.95 - so in total, it cost me over £800. As mentioned, the room has recently been refurbished, but I would say it's not quite 100% finished. A couple of the tablecloths were a bit grubby look and one had a burn mark in it. We paid for 48 people (the room is meant to hold 60), but there were only 4 tables with 8 chairs on each, so I had to ask them to put out another table and more chairs for everyone. The food was plentiful, and very beige - lots of typical buffet food - pork pies, spring rolls, chicken nuggets etc. a selection of sandwiches and a couple of large cakes. Towards the end of the afternoon, there was still a few sandwiches etc leftover, so I asked the lady if she had any takeaway boxes, and she gave me around 6, however they were quite small. So my dad went and asked for a few more......I was utterly gobsmacked when the chap behind the bar said I'd have to pay for them! OK, they were 10p each, so 40p in total - hardly gonna break the bank, but I was just genuinely amazed and shocked they want to charge me for them, especially as we had probably spent over £1,000 if you included the bar tab! I know its only 40p, but the attitude of the guy was not good, and it was already an emotional day, and this just annoyed me even more - if my dad hadn't been there, I would have asked to speak with the manager about it! 40p - I still can't believe they made me pay it! 😱😫🤬
