About This Pub
Ah, The Greyhound – it's one of those local gems in Sydenham that really knows how to make you feel at home with its cosy vibe and genuinely friendly team who go out of their way to ensure you're having a good time. From the reviews, it's clear that the staff shine brightly, offering spot-on recommendations and creating that warm, buzzy environment that's just right for a casual pint or a hearty Sunday roast. The food can be a real winner too, with dishes like the beef roast getting high praise for being delicious and well-prepared, and it's great to see they cater to all sorts with options like mocktails for those not drinking. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – a few folks have mentioned smaller portions that don't quite satisfy, and there've been complaints about food arriving lukewarm or even cold, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a proper meal. Plus, there might be some hitches with table bookings, as one group found out when they couldn't switch spots despite others being free. Overall, if you're popping in for the atmosphere and service, you'll likely have a brilliant time, but it's worth keeping expectations in check for the grub to avoid any disappointments. I'd say it's a solid choice for a get-together, just maybe pair it with a plan B for dinner elsewhere if you're extra hungry!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – friendly, attentive, and always ready with a great recommendation, like that delicious mocktail one reviewer raved about.
-
The atmosphere is spot on; it's warm, comfortable, and full of personality, perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates or a family meal.
-
Food highlights include tasty roasts and other high-quality dishes that really hit the spot, especially on Sundays when there's a real buzz about the place.
-
It's a stylish spot with outdoor dining options, making it ideal for enjoying a summer evening or watching events like the Euros in a lively setting.
Cons
-
Portions can be on the small side, like that cod and chips that left one person still feeling peckish after their meal.
-
Food quality isn't always consistent – some reports of dishes arriving just warm or even cold, which puts a damper on things.
-
Table availability might be a bit of a hassle; one group was told a table was reserved but it sat empty the whole time they were there.
-
It doesn't always live up to past visits, with a few folks noting it's gone downhill, so it might not be as reliable as you'd hope.

Great customer service at Greyhound today!
My mum and I stopped by and had such a lovely time. The young lady who recommended a mocktail for me absolutely nailed it — it was delicious, and I enjoyed it so much! Friendly service and a great atmosphere made the visit even better.
Attended The Greyhound for a family birthday meal and ordered cod as a main. When it finally arrived both the cod and the portion of chips were child-sized. I was still hungry after I had finished my meal which isn’t normally the case whenever I have had a main course elsewhere. Based on this experience I wouldn’t have any more food here, it isn’t worth the money they charge. Extra star awarded for the friendly, attentive staff.
Previously a great roast, but the most recent visit was not good. Food was warm at best, some components of the roast was cold.
We asked to move table to one that was less out in the open but was told it was reserved only for it to be available for our entire visit.
I’d also skip the two course set price as it was cheaper to order individually.
Should revert back to individual prices for Sunday roasts.
This is an excellent pub and restaurant. I remembered it from when I was a small child, so when we went back as siblings plus grandson (and great-granddaughter) to scatter my mother’s ashes where she grew up, we decided to book a table for lunch afterwards. Due to my brother and his wife being stuck in traffic in Central London our meeting time of 12 noon didn’t work, but Greyhound staff let my son and his baby come in and wait, and then my sister joined us. We ended up going for a walk, then coming back and once again using their toilet. Then while we were waiting for the other two to arrive, the time of our booking came and went. I rang the Greyhound and they were completely fine with us and put our table booking back one hour. After the ashes scattering we went back, they found us a large table with room for the buggy and took our drinks order. The menu was good with traditional pub food like fish and chips or burger, with more adventurous stuff. At this point I discovered my siblings weren’t hungry(!!) but I managed to persuade them to eat something and they enjoyed starters with a side dish as a light lunch. Apparently the soufflé on the starter menu is never available, but my brother and his wife stopped at a restaurant in Warwick on the way home and managed to get a lovely cheese soufflé so all was well. Food was hot and freshly made and brought to the table at the same time. My son had the burger which he thought was okay (probably on the menu because people expect it). I had the mussels and fries. They came in a big pot with a lid and chips in a cup. My brother had prawns so they gave us a finger bowl to share. The sauce on my mussels was delicious but a lot got left in the bottom. My brother gave me half a slice of ciabatta that came with his prawns so I soaked up some of the sauce, but I couldn’t manage to keep the sauce on the mussel shell without it going back into the pan when I ate the mussel. All the ‘starter and side’ people thought the food was lovely. There was a drinks list with some different beers and cocktails - son and brother had Battersea brewery beer and loved it. But there was no wine list, so I ordered Sauvignon blanc and my sister-in-law had a glass too. It was really good, even if I had chosen from a list I couldn’t have chosen better. There was a jug of water for the table which we had before we ordered any drinks which was a nice touch.
Our waitress was lovely and helpful, but so were all the staff including the young woman who saw me arriving for our meal and greeted me like a regular after my earlier visits to use the facilities!
While I was sitting waiting for family members an old man drinking beer at the next table said to me ‘they’ve really done this pub up well’ and I agreed. It has a really good ambience and decor, smart but very comfortable and welcoming. And even though they showed rugby in the afternoon it was down the other end far away from the restaurant area and not too loud.
A great pub for a drink, a meal or a just a place to meet. Friendly and welcoming, with great food and drinks. I highly recommend it.
Great pub with a good atmosphere and a good roast dinner on a Sunday.
We had the roast beef and it was delicious.
Staff were really friendly and attentive and made you feel welcome. Felt like the place had a real buzz about it over lunch.
Will have to go back on an evening to see what it's like.
