About This Pub

Ah, The Flying Standard – it's one of those reliable Wetherspoons pubs that you can always count on for a good time without breaking the bank. From what I've gathered from the chats online, most folks absolutely love the place for its central location slap bang in Coventry, making it dead easy to pop in after a spot of shopping. The decor's a real highlight, with all those industrial heritage touches that give it a warm, story-filled feel, and the food and drinks come out quick and tasty, whether you're grabbing breakfast or settling in for a pint. They've got outdoor seating for sunny days and fun events like curry nights, which add a bit of excitement to the mix. On the flip side, though, it's not perfect – there are a fair few stairs that could be a bother if you're not as mobile, and we had one story about them not letting in an assistance dog, which is a bit of a downer and might make some think twice. Overall, it's a friendly spot with a 4.1 rating, so if you're after value and a relaxed vibe, it's worth a visit, but just keep those accessibility bits in mind to avoid any surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a cracking spot in the heart of Coventry, right near the shops, making it super convenient for a quick pint or meal after browsing.
  • The decor is spot on, with nods to Coventry's industrial history like photos of old cars and a vintage clock – it really adds a nice touch of character.
  • Food and drinks are reliably good and affordable, just like you'd expect from a Wetherspoons – think quick service on brekkie or a pint of something tasty like Stowford Press.
  • They've got outdoor seating for when the sun's out, plus events like Steak Club on Tuesdays and Curry Club on Thursdays, which keep things lively.
  • Open from 8am till late every day, so it's perfect for a morning coffee or an evening wind-down, with options for everyone from kids' meals to adult favourites.
Cons
  • There are quite a few stairs around the place, which might make it tricky for anyone with mobility issues or if you're pushing a pram.
  • One downside we've heard is that they weren't accommodating with an assistance dog, which is a real shame and could put some folks off.
  • It can feel a bit quieter than other pubs at certain times, like midday on a Sunday, so if you're after a buzzing atmosphere, it might not always hit the mark.
  • The interior is pretty standard Wetherspoons style – functional but nothing fancy, so it won't wow you with unique vibes.

Visited while staying nearby in Coventry. What a magnificent looking Spoons this is. In glorious sun it looked even better. It was quiet as it was relatively early so got a table in the window. Ordered our breki and it arrived quite quickly. Delicious as always. It is situated near the shops and close to the bus stops and nearby bus station. Plenty of areas and also a little upstairs bar and seating area. I can see this getting very busy of an evening. A lovely spoons with lots of history.

This centrally located pub has a very cool outside, with standard Wetherspoons interior. It felt quieter on midday Sunday than other locations we've visited, and has both downstairs and upstairs seating. Food and drinks came out quickly. Facilities: Toilets are clean, but quite a lot of stairs to get to the woman's loo (beyond where the men's was located).

This was a fantastic pub for drinking, carrying the industrial history of Coventry over with its decor! This includes the photos of the motor industry's cars and the area with an old clock, counter is well-presented itself. I had a nice pint of Stowford Press, appreciating the outside seating!
