About This Pub
Ah, the Golden Cross – it's one of those pubs that just feels special from the moment you walk in, with its ancient Tudor features and that welcoming vibe that's earned it a solid 4.4 rating. I love how they've kept the history alive, like the exposed beams and dragon beams from way back in the 1500s, making it a proper treat for anyone who appreciates a bit of character in their local. The food's a real highlight too; they've nailed the gluten-free options, with fresh, tasty dishes that cater to all sorts without any fuss, as plenty of visitors have raved about. Pair that with a cracking selection of drinks – think real ales, gins from far and wide, and more – and you've got yourself a relaxing spot for a catch-up with mates. The staff are an absolute delight, always on hand with efficient service that keeps things smooth and enjoyable. But, fair's fair, it's not perfect; food service does stop at certain times, so if you're popping in late, you might just be limited to drinks. And if you're into watching the footie or rugby, this isn't the place, as they skip the sports channels in favour of good old conversation. Still, for a laid-back evening or a special event in their function room, it's spot on – I'd say give it a go if you're in Coventry, and you'll likely leave with a smile.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic Tudor building is absolutely charming, with exposed beams and a rich history dating back to 1583 – it's like stepping back in time while enjoying a pint.
-
They've got a brilliant selection of gluten-free food options, making it a welcoming spot for anyone with dietary needs, and the meals are fresh and tasty based on what folks are saying.
-
The staff are so friendly and efficient, always ready with a smile and quick service that makes you feel right at home.
-
A cracking range of drinks on offer, from real ales and gins from around the world to great lagers and ciders – plenty to suit all tastes.
-
They've got an upstairs function room with its own bar, perfect for hosting special occasions or a more intimate gathering.
Cons
-
Food service wraps up at set times, like by 3pm on Sundays or earlier on some days, so you might need to plan ahead to avoid missing out.
-
It's not the place for watching sports, as they don't show Sky or BT Sport – more focused on chats and atmosphere than screens.
-
They close for a few days around holidays like Christmas and New Year's, which is understandable but could catch you out if you're visiting then.

This pub has it all ! Brilliant ( ok didn’t do food ) - Music did help - Anyway wont bore you with repetition of previous reviews just. GO.
We went for lunch when we were visiting the Cathedral. It was quiet with friendly, efficient service and the food was very good with a good menu. Specializes in gluten free.
This is said to be the oldest pub in Coventry (they post the history on the back of the menu on the tables) and is very welcoming. Employees are friendly, as were some of the locals there.
Food was very good, and catered for dietary requests without any issue. There was a wide range of gins, vodkas and they also served real ale.
The overall atmosphere was lovely, and definitely a pub I would recommend, helped by its location near Coventry Cathedral which adds to its list of positive reasons to choose it as a place to visit for a drink and/or food.
Beautiful place. The building is rich in history with old photos around for people too look at. The menus have the history written on them as well.
The staff are friendly and very prompt with orders.
The food was perfect. No complaints at all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Went to the Golden Cross after reading reviews for gluten free food, we had visited the Transport museum so it was perfect for a meal before home, my father in law needs gluten free so was perfect! we arrived at 2.45pm and food finished at 3pm so we were pleased to get order in just in time! i could smell urine from the toilets which was a shame, but the food was tasty and plenty, and service was friendly and officiant. would go there again if back in the area. beautiful old building.
