About This Pub

Ah, The Florence, what a gem in Herne Hill! I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot for a relaxed afternoon or evening out. The food is where it really shines – their Sunday roasts are legendary, with plenty of options for veggies, and they've got these new menus that keep things exciting without breaking the bank. Pop in for a pint in that fabulous beer garden, especially on a sunny day, and you'll see why it's such a favourite; it's got that perfect mix of cosy indoors and outdoor charm, plus they screen live sports so you won't miss a match. The staff are generally lovely and make you feel welcome, even if they do get a tad stretched when it's busy. On the flip side, though, there might be the odd moment where service slows down a bit or a dish isn't quite as sturdy as you'd hope – like that burger that could use a bit more assembly love. Still, it's all part of the pub experience, and with its great location near Brockwell Park, it's worth overlooking the small hiccups. Overall, if you're after a place with good grub, good craic, and a welcoming feel, give The Florence a go – you might just make it your regular haunt!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, especially their Sunday roasts and veggie options – always fresh and full of flavour, making it a real treat for a proper pub meal.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a fantastic beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun or watching live sports on the screens.
  • Service is generally friendly and attentive, even when things get busy, which makes you feel right at home.
  • It's dog-friendly and family-friendly, plus they've got great deals like Wing Wednesday and affordable Prosecco on Fridays, adding to the fun vibes.
  • Location-wise, it's right opposite Brockwell Park, so it's ideal for a post-walk pint or to catch up with mates in a historic setting.
Cons
  • They can sometimes seem a bit short-staffed, which might mean waits for service, even if the team stays calm and helpful.
  • A few dishes, like the burgers, might not always hold together perfectly, which is a minor niggle but could disappoint if you're after something flawless.
  • It gets pretty packed on Sundays for those roasts, so you might need to book ahead to avoid missing out or facing a longer wait.

We’ve been to the Florence a few times for a Sunday roast now and each time the menu seems to be a little bit different, but the food is always amazing. The veggie roast in particular is great. Service and atmosphere is always amazing too - would highly recommend!

We held a memorial dinner for around 15 friends on Friday 28th March 2025. The manager and team couldn’t have been more helpful. Despite seeming a little short-staffed, they remained calm, kind and attentive throughout the evening. Really grateful—thank you!

Food came out fast, casual professional service. Food was hot and fresh. Double cheeseburger is the answer to scratch the Big Mac itch. Instead of eating mickie D’s have one of these, the thousand island.. I mean special sauce is spot on. The burger was a little unstable, I can forgive the unstable foundation since the ingredients were deliciously fresh and well seasoned. Puddings were better than expected, lemon polenta cake and sticky toffee pudding are worth the add on.

🚇 Herne Hill 🍺 £6.50 Paulaner The Florence is located opposite Brockwell Park in the leafy South London suburb of Herne Hill. The nearest station is Herne Hill mainline. This beautifully tiled pub was originally called The Railway Tavern, built in 1871. The name changed to The Brockwell Park Tavern in the 1890’s following the opening of Brockwell Park in 1892. It was renamed the Brockwell Park Hotel in the 1970’s, following a short period as Ganley’s Irish Bar, it became the Florence in 2007. This is a spacious and airy pub that is traditionally decorated with a contemporary feel. At the heart of the pub is an island severy with a modern back bar. The main bar area has plenty of seating both high and low plus interesting features like the wall clock, marble fireplace and leaded stained windows. Just off the main bar is a stylish dining area with an open kitchen. At the back of the pub is a patio beer garden, at the front of the pub our a few tables and chairs to watch the world go by. The beer selection is good and offers a choice of premium beers, London brews and cask ales. I decided on a Paulaner which is a favourite of mine, my pint was excellent, price point was above average. There is a classic pub grub menu available, Fish & Chips costs £18, Roasts take centre stage on a Sunday. I arrived just after 12pm on a warm Saturday lunchtime in September. The pub had just opened, so there wasn’t many punters in except a few in the beer garden. The atmosphere was calm with soulful tunes playing in the background. The service was great, there were a few team members beavering away preparing the pub all were friendly and welcoming. There is plenty on to keep you entertained with a Quiz on a Wednesday, DJ’s Friday and Saturday and Jazz on a Sunday. Visiting @theflorencepub was an enjoyable experience. I loved the Victorian glazed tiles that clad the exterior, the decor made for a pleasant environment to spend time in, the beer choice is good and the team are friendly. This pub is a good allrounder, definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. 📅 21st September 2024 More London Pub info @londonpubmap 🍻
