About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about The Farmhouse at Redcoats – it's one of those places that just warms your heart from the moment you arrive. Tucked away in the picturesque Hertfordshire countryside, this 15th-century farmhouse has that perfect blend of quirky history and modern style, making it ideal for a cosy meal or even a short stay. What really stands out is the food; they're all about that farm-to-fork ethos, using fresh, seasonal ingredients from their own organic garden, so everything tastes incredibly fresh and flavoursome. Whether you're tucking into a hearty Sunday roast or exploring their vegan options, it's clear they've put real thought into making it accessible and enjoyable for all. The service is another winner – the team is so friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and a helpful suggestion, which makes the whole experience feel personal and welcoming. On the flip side, it's a tad disappointing that dogs aren't allowed in the main restaurant, as it could be a lovely spot for a family outing with pets. Plus, without clear operating hours online, you might end up faffing about with plans. Overall, though, it's a cracking choice if you're after a relaxed, high-quality escape rather than a boisterous pub night – I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone looking to unwind with good grub and great vibes.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The service is absolutely top-notch, with staff going above and beyond to make you feel welcome – it's like chatting with old mates who know just what you need.
  • The food is a real highlight, focusing on fresh, locally sourced ingredients straight from their own garden, making every meal feel wholesome and delicious, whether it's a Sunday roast or a vegan option.
  • It's set in a gorgeous 15th-century farmhouse in the Hertfordshire countryside, full of historic charm and stylish touches that make it perfect for a relaxing getaway or a special occasion.
  • They've got great options for different diets, like a whole vegan menu and clear allergen info, which is brilliant if you're watching what you eat.
  • Plenty of parking and a smooth operation, especially for events like weddings, where everything runs like clockwork without feeling too stuffy.
Cons
  • It seems a bit strict on allowing dogs in the main restaurant, which might disappoint if you're hoping to bring your furry friend along for the meal.
  • Operating hours aren't clearly listed, so you might have to plan ahead or check in advance to avoid any surprises.
  • While it's lovely, it feels more like a refined restaurant and hotel than a traditional pub, so if you're after a casual, lively atmosphere, it might not quite hit the spot.

Spent one evening as a short local getaway. Was so pleasantly surprised by the exceptional service, firstly we were very kindly offered an upgrade to our already gorgeous room in the barn to a stunning room overlooking the courtyard, next we were given a table at the bar despite not making a booking, and fully taken care of by the staff. The food was exceptional- would highly highly recommend the 10oz 40 day dry aged steak and hand dived scallops. Breakfast was divine with a generous menu and buffet spread. Last but not least the stay itself was wonderful, the grounds are garden are gorgeous, perfectly tucked away near the A1 and would happily visit again.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve worked at venues all across the country — and Redcoats stands out as one of the absolute best. From a supplier’s point of view, everything about this place runs like clockwork, without ever feeling rushed or rigid. The team — especially Charlie and Megan — were an absolute dream to work with. Warm, professional, calm under pressure, and totally invested in making sure the day flows effortlessly. They go above and beyond, not just for the couples, but for everyone involved. The venue itself is stunning — full of rustic charm and character, with beautiful grounds, cozy corners, and that perfect blend of historic charm and modern elegance. The ceremony space is filled with natural light, the gardens are ideal for portraits, and the reception barn has such a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a photographer’s dream in every season. If you’re a couple looking for a venue that feels both relaxed and refined, with a brilliant team behind it — Redcoats should be at the top of your list. Honestly, it’s the kind of venue that makes magic happen, and I can’t wait to be back there again soon. Jamie Le Beau Photography

The level of service at the Farmhouse is sensational. Everyone was so helpful, kind, fabulous. I’ve not experienced such a high level of restaurant service for a while. They were very clear and helpful with allergens and had a whole vegan menu that was great to see. Lots of parking too. Looking forward to going back.

Stayed there for one night. The service, room, food, and the place overall were astonishing—far beyond our expectations. Prices are fair and reasonable. I only hope that, in the future, well-behaved and friendly dog(s) will be allowed in the main restaurant. They are part of the family, after all.
