About This Pub
Ah, The Ensign Ewart – it's one of those pubs that just captures the heart of Edinburgh, doesn't it? Perched right up on the Royal Mile near the castle, it's got this inviting, old-school Scottish feel with wooden beams and a snug atmosphere that pulls you in from the get-go. I love how they've kept that historical essence alive since the 1680s, while still keeping things fresh with a rotating selection of around 250 whiskies – it's not the biggest out there, but it's got some real gems that change up regularly, perfect for a wee tasting session with mates. The staff are an absolute joy; they're so approachable and keen to chat about recommendations, which really makes the place stand out. Plus, the live music in the evenings, like those folk tunes on guitar and fiddle, adds a magical touch that can turn a simple night out into something memorable. On the food front, their lighter bites are spot on – think scrumptious Scotch pies and local charcuterie at great prices – but if you're hoping for a full-blown meal, it might fall a bit short. And honestly, while it's a gem, do keep in mind the steps at the entrance and the lack of accessible facilities; it's not ideal for folks with mobility needs. Overall, it's a brilliant spot for whisky lovers or anyone wanting a genuine, relaxed Edinburgh experience, but it's worth weighing up those little niggles to ensure it's the right fit for your group.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming and traditional, with a cosy Scottish vibe that makes you feel right at home, especially with its rich history dating back to 1680.
-
They've got a cracking selection of whiskies – around 250 options that change regularly, including rare finds and Scottish classics, which is a treat for any whisky enthusiast.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and helpful advice, making every visit feel personal and enjoyable.
-
Live music, like folk sessions, adds a brilliant touch of entertainment and really brings the place to life in the evenings.
-
Great value deals, such as the Pie and a Pint for just £8, with tasty local bites from suppliers like IJ Mellis, paired with fresh cask ales from Scottish breweries.
-
Its prime spot on the Royal Mile, right near Edinburgh Castle, makes it super convenient for a quick stop or a full evening out.
Cons
-
Accessibility can be a bit tricky with steps at the entrance and inside, plus no accessible toilets, so it might not be the easiest for everyone to navigate.
-
The food menu is quite small, focusing on lighter bites rather than full meals, which could leave you wanting more if you're after a substantial dinner.
-
While the whisky selection is impressive, it's not the largest in Edinburgh, so if you're after something truly exhaustive, you might need to look elsewhere.

Great pub experience!
We had the “Pie and a Pint” deal for just £8 and it was excellent. The Scotch pie was warm, tasty, and perfectly crispy. The cask ale was fresh and smooth. The place has a cozy, traditional Scottish atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly. Great stop for a quick and authentic meal in Edinburgh! Highly recommend.
Great pub. Our favorite one on a 2 week trip through Scotland. Staff was nice. The beer was always cold. And good entertainment in the evening. Really enjoyed it.
Could you please teach me the musicians? A guy playing the guitar and the women playing the fiddle. They made my night in Edinburgh truly wonderful. The music, Scotch, along with the amazing atmosphere of this bar, has become an unforgettable memory in my life. I am truly grateful. Thank you so much. from Japan.
A beautiful pub in the centre of Edinburgh. Cosy and typical in style: lots of wood and not much light. The menu offers various local dishes, including vegetarian versions. Many beers on tap in the selection and plenty of whiskies.
Been here for 3 nights straight! Amazing live folk music and really cool historical vibe in general. The staff are all very kind and welcoming, definitely recommend going if you’re in Edinburgh. Lots of whiskeys beers spirits all very reasonably priced!!
