About This Pub
Ah, The Duke of York – it's one of those pubs that's bang in the heart of York station, making it super handy if you're waiting for a train or just popping in for a break. From what I've gathered from chats with others, the atmosphere really shines through as a proper, old-school pub feel, and if you're lucky, you might snag a cracking chicken burger or a decent pint that hits the spot after a long journey. The staff do their best to handle the crowds, which is always appreciated when things get hectic. On the flip side, it's not all roses; the place can come across as a bit gloomy inside, and you'll notice the prices are a bit steep for portions that don't always impress – think paying over the odds for a small plate of chips or a drink. Service can be hit or miss too, with some reports of less than sunny faces behind the bar, and those locked toilets are just a minor pain that adds to the frustration. All in all, it's worth a visit if you're in the area and fancy a no-fuss spot, but go in with realistic expectations to avoid any disappointments – it's got that reliable pub charm, but with a few rough edges that keep it from being top-notch.
Pros and Cons

-
It's conveniently located right at York station, making it an ideal spot for travellers looking for a bite or a drink without straying too far.

Some of the food hits the mark, like that crispy chicken burger – sounds like a winner if you're peckish.
-
The staff really pull through in busy moments, doing their best to keep things moving even when the bar's packed.
Cons
-
It can feel a bit dingy inside, almost like exhaust fumes or something have left their mark, which might put you off if you're after a fresh, airy space.
-
Prices are on the steep side for what you get – a pint or some chips might cost more than you'd expect, leaving you feeling a tad short-changed.
-
Service isn't always cheerful; some folks have mentioned staff looking unhappy, which can dampen the mood.
-
Little annoyances like locked toilets that need a receipt to access can be a hassle, especially if you're in a rush.

It is a bit dingy. You would think someone had been smoking in there unless the exhaust fumes from the traffic outside have done this, beer, not particularly cheap.
Never tried the food.
Great place. The atmosphere is very pub. Good drinking place. Reached York near noon time and was looking for a lunch place. Excellent place, good location at the train station. Order the chicken burger and a pint of fosters. Chicken burger was excellent, crispy but not dry at all. Added mayonnaise to the burger. Highly recommend for a quick stop to drink before or after your trip.
Had a quick pint before catching my train home. Nice enough pub. Unfortunately, the toilets were locked 🔒 something about showing your receipt to the bar staff to get the key. I was in too much of a hurry to bother.
This place is awful 🤣 the guy served me with a very unhappy face and then charged me £12.50 for two juices and a plate of chips 🙈 a very small plate of chips may I add. I’m not surprised by the amount of stars it has.
Came here for our first drink before York races. Great atmosphere, the bar was busy but the staff did their best to get us served quickly. Typical, I chose the drink everyone was having Guinness, but it was worth the weight.
