About This Pub

Ah, the Windmill Inn – it's one of those pubs in York that just feels like a reliable old friend, you know? I've heard from folks who've popped in that the staff are absolute gems, always up for a chat and making sure everything's just right, which really adds to the warm, community vibe. The food can be a real treat when it's good, like tucking into a delicious beef and ale pie or a generous Sunday roast that leaves you satisfied. Plus, if you're into your sports, it's brilliant for watching the big games with a pint in hand, and the beer garden's a nice touch for sunnier days. They've got loads of facilities too, like being dog-friendly and welcoming families, so it's flexible for different outings. On the flip side, though, some have mentioned that the food isn't always consistent – you might get something a bit underwhelming, like overcooked meats or lacklustre sides – and it's not the cheapest spot around, especially when you compare it to places like the one across the way. Overall, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening, but if you're watching your wallet or after something extraordinary, it might not blow you away. Still, I'd say it's worth a visit for the atmosphere and that top-notch service – just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • They've got some cracking food options, like that beef and ale pie or the Sunday roast – proper hearty and tasty when it's on point.
  • It's a brilliant spot for catching live sports, with Sky Sports and TNT, plus a beer garden to enjoy the action in the fresh air.
  • Dog-friendly and family-friendly vibes make it a versatile choice for a casual get-together.
  • Good selection of beers on tap and gins, perfect for a relaxed evening with mates.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit hit or miss, like overcooked roasts or underwhelming potatoes that don't quite live up to the hype.
  • Prices are on the steeper side compared to nearby spots, so you might end up paying more for what's essentially standard pub fare.
  • It doesn't always feel like it's offering something truly special – more of a reliable option than a standout experience.
  • Depending on the day, the food might not justify the cost, especially if you're used to better value elsewhere in York.

My sister and I found this gem a short distance from our hotel. The food was delicious, and Phoebe, our server was attentive and super nice! The beef and ale pie was amazing, as were the BBQ cheese fries. Thank you for the great meal!!

I would recommend this place if you want excellent service from friendly staff and a solid standard pub menu. Some good beers on tap and a good selection of gins....

Nice pub in a good location, friendly staff but unfortunately mediocre food at the time of our visit. We had the Sunday lunch, roast beef which was over done and rather chewy and the anaemic roast potatoes looked like they'd never seen an oven. It was edible but I certainly wouldn't recommend it plus the smell from the toilets was rather off-putting.

Expensive..Had their fish and chips, perfectly OK, nothing special, but identical to the Wetherspoons opposite except (with a beer £19.09) instead of £9.97 at Wetherspoons! In response to the Windmill's reply asking what could be done to justify charging twice as much as the pub next door (The Punch Bowl) for virtually identical ambiance, beer, food & service. Other than price match how about larger portions, include a desert or coffee?
