About This Pub
Ah, The Crossing in Burton-on-Trent – what a gem it is, really capturing that classic pub feel with its rich history tied to the town's famous brewing scene. I love how they've kept the 18th-century charm while adding modern touches, making it a proper cosy spot to unwind with a pint of real ale or one of their pub classics. The staff stand out as absolute stars; stories of them surprising visitors with free drinks for birthdays just warm the heart and make you feel like part of the gang. Plus, with options for vegans, vegetarians, and gluten-free eaters, it's clear they're thinking of everyone, and the beer garden and live music add a fun buzz to the place. On the flip side, it's not without its flaws – I've heard a few tales of service hiccups, like tables not fully set or confusion over allergen info, which could be a bother if you're particular about that. There are whispers of it not being quite as sharp as it used to be, perhaps with some changes behind the scenes, so it might not hit the mark every time. All in all, with a solid reputation overall, I'd say it's worth popping in for a chat and a drink if you're nearby, just go in with an open mind and maybe check ahead for what you need.

Beautiful meal, prompt and exact! Staff extremely helpful and friendly and even took the time to chat. Treated us both to a free drink - was there celebrating a Birthday , and we even had a free scrumptious pudding whilst the staff sung Happy Birthday! Made our lunch extra special!
Would definitely recommend and will be returning.
Great atmosphere and very clean establishment.
Reasonable priced, good value.
Avoid. I have taken friends & family to Crossing multiple times over the last 5 years, not sure if they've changed ownership or staff, but this last year not worth the trip.
On my last visit, I asked for some clarification on allergen information (on individual items & cross contamination), as the allergen data sheet they gave was a tad confusing and my friend was highly allergic to certain foods. I got a "We serve that all the time" & "I'm sure it's fine" from the barman. We decided to play it safe and try somewhere else.
I had entered our car reg into the parking tablet, as they have new parking charges & cameras, though had asked the barman for the date and either put the wrong date in or may have been a problem with the tablet. Eitherway, I got slapped with a £100 parking fine, despite having only been parked up for less than the complimentary 30minute grace period it says in the T&C's. I've spent that last couple months arguing with the parking enforcement. Emailed the Crossing for some help & got nothing.
There are better places to eat in Burton where you won't get slapped with parking fines and the staff actually attempt to help.
Return visit in February 2023: Under the management of the same guy who runs e.g. The Exeter Arms in Derby and The Devonshire in Belper, The Crossing now serves basically the same food as those pubs, and that's a good thing. Because it's great pub food, especially the wonderful Chippy. One more reason to recommend this place!
Original review:
The Crossing is one of the nicest, most comfortable pubs in Burton upon Trent - and a firm favorite among real ale lovers. It's spacious too, and includes a large outside seating area in the back. You will find the decor unfussy, friendly and comfortable. Superior pub food is available, I tried the Derbyshire roast beef and found it of excellent quality - and the portion was huge, too. Staff are friendly and helpful, prices for food & beer are certainly competitive for the area. Family-friendly place.

We love this place. It looks great inside and out. Someone may think that the cleanliness is not perfect like everyone else's home😉 ....... But the customer attitude is not likely to leave you indifferent. Super friendly staff, they always try to do their best to keep you happy here. Among the pizzas I probably like the Catalana the best, also the red fish wrap is delicious . The kid loves (sweet potato) fries. And how to do without ice cream 😂. It's nice that many of the dishes can be ordered with a gluten free option. Waiting for warm weather to sit in the cozy courtyard.
Edit may 2022...I'm afraid I'm downgrading to a 2 star. We reserved a table for 4 people. Showed to our seats and they took our drinks order straight away which is good. Food order was taken not long after that. That's about the last good thing. The table was only half set with forks missing on our table , and others as I looked round. Knives yes, forks no. The food took a hell of a long time to come considering we were the only table that was occupied. The roast chicken was lovely aside from the roast potatoes were burnt and inedible. The yorkshire pudding was homemade and lovely. Other diners with me said the roast beef was overcooked to. The pizza that my other diner had he said was lovely. We were really looking forward to a Sunday dinner. It was the service that was awful. They came to collect the plates and only took half and never came back for the rest and our glasses weren't cleared away. We had 4 rounds worth of glasses on the table, 3 lots empty as we were eating our meal. Definitely won't go back again.
Been here 3 or 4 times for food. And I must admit the past couple of times I've been I haven't really enjoyed the food. First time I went it was fantastic. Just the last roast dinner I had there was disappointing. Staff are a bit slow on the uptake. Seems to take them forever to come round to you even when the place isnt that busy.
