About This Pub

Ah, The Crooked Billet – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local haunt, you know? From what I've gathered, it's got this inviting atmosphere where you can sink into a comfy spot with a pint of their excellent real ales; they've even won a Silver Award, which says a lot about their brews and overall vibe. The food's a highlight too, with menus full of seasonal treats like steak nights and Sunday lunches that use local produce, making it feel fresh and thoughtful. Folks rave about the friendly service and the gorgeous garden for those balmy evenings, and it's clear it's become a community favourite with events that get everyone mingling. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – there are times when the food might not hit the mark, like a dish coming out cold or not quite cooked through, and a few have had off days with waits or billing mix-ups. Still, with most reviews glowing and recent ones being bang on five stars, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after a solid pub experience; just keep an eye on those little niggles and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is spot on, with traditional pub grub given a modern twist using fresh, seasonal local ingredients – it's proper hearty and tasty.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of real ales, including rotating guest ones, which makes it a treat for any ale enthusiast.
  • The atmosphere is just lovely; it's a warm, welcoming spot with a beautiful garden perfect for summer evenings and even a game of pétanque.
  • Service is generally attentive and friendly, making you feel right at home, and they've got regular events that really bring the community together.
  • It's picked up a Silver Award as a top local pub, and with an overall rating around 4.2, it's clear folks are coming back for more.
Cons
  • There have been a few gripes about food not being up to scratch sometimes, like dishes arriving cold or not fully cooked, which can put a dampener on things.
  • Service isn't always spot on, with some mentioning long waits for food or even extra items turning up on the bill that weren't ordered.
  • Not every visit is a winner – a couple of reviews pointed out that while the pub looks great, the food might not live up to expectations for a full meal.
  • It's closed on Mondays, so if you're planning a midweek pint, you'll have to check the times to avoid disappointment.

Top tier food. Lovely atmosphere. My new favourite spot to enjoy a drink and food.

Our local pub has become so much more than just a place to grab a pint—it’s the beating heart of our village, thanks to Paul, Ness and their team. It’s everything you could want from a proper country pub: a huge, beautiful garden ideal for summer evenings, a cheeky game of pétanque, or dinner under their tented patio (which feels a bit magical, to be honest). The food is absolutely top-notch—comforting when you need it, and impressive when you’re out to celebrate. What really sets it apart, though, is the atmosphere. There’s a warmth and welcome here that wraps around you the moment you walk in. Staff and locals alike make it feel like home, and the sense of community is something really special. The live music on Wednesdays is a midweek treat—always quality, always mood-lifting. It’s fair to say this place has changed life in Newton Longville in the best way. Whether swinging by after a long workday when I just can’t face cooking, or when planning a proper evening out, it hits the mark every single time. And our dog? Obsessed. Pretty sure he’d write his own five-star review if he could.

The new management has done an excellent job and we’ll definitely be back multiple times! Service is very attentive and friendly and the bar area is very comfy and with a good atmosphere. The menu is well thought out, we had Scotch Egg, Steak, Fish and Chips and the Crumble and all were decent sizes and tasted great. Wine list is relatively small but has more than enough choice for any budget. We hadn’t been here since the new owners took over and wish we’d been sooner! We definitely will return.

Had the steak pudding. The suet didn’t seem fully cooked. It wasn’t very piping hot but the mash & gravy were luck warm. Mash also had lumps in it. Husband had the steak. It wasn’t a great cut. He likes it blue.

Although pub looking great but service was disappointing and food awful. A long wait for starter, Soup was cold, Burger was dry/not fresh, Same with fries. Yet extra items on the bill which never have ordered! Maybe just for drink, definitely not for food!
