About This Pub

Ah, The Cottage Tavern – it's one of those pubs that can really hit the spot if you're after a relaxed evening with friends or a bit of live entertainment. From the chats I've had, the staff are just lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which adds to that homely vibe. The place does events brilliantly too; imagine catching a fabulous live set that gets everyone clapping along – it's moments like that which make it stand out. On the flip side, though, it seems the new landlord hasn't quite gelled with everyone yet, with some mentioning a lack of warmth that takes the edge off what used to be a welcoming haunt. And let's not forget the odd complaint about the quiz nights not being as fair as they'd like, which is a pity because it could be a real highlight. All in all, if you're in Sunderland and fancy a pint, I'd say give it a go – the good bits outweigh the niggles, but it's worth keeping in mind that it's not perfect, just like any local spot.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant, always friendly and ready to lend a hand, making you feel right at home.
  • It's a cracking spot for live music and events, with performances that really get the crowd going and create a lively buzz.
  • The decor and furnishings give it a cosy, welcoming feel, perfect for relaxing with a pint after a good walk or just catching up with mates.
Cons
  • The new landlord seems a bit distant and not as engaging, which has left some feeling less than welcome on their visits.
  • There have been a few grumbles about the quiz nights not being on the up and up, with some unfair goings-on that spoil the fun.

Been going here for nearly 20 years. Sadly the new landlord is not very welcoming. Zero interaction with us everytime we go. Such a shame from what the cottage used to be

Did not go here for the food so cannot offer a score for that. Went to see the fabulous Russ Tippins performing two sets, one acoustic and the second electric. Both were exceptional in delivery, my preference being electric but both worthy of the tremendous reception by the audience.

Great place to pop in for a pint after a 13 mile walk along the coast from South Shields to Whitburn. We often go there its decor and furnishings make it very comfortable and welcoming , the staff are always friendly and now it's got the added bonus of WiFi.
