About This Pub
Ah, The Coopers Tavern – it's one of those pubs that just sticks in your mind, isn't it? From what I've gathered from folks who've popped in, it's got this rich history as a former brewer's house and malt store for Bass, which really shines through in the authentic decor and that sampling cellar where they pour the ales straight from the cask. The beers are the star of the show; you've got Joule's classics like Pale Ale and Green Monkey lager, all brewed with pure Shropshire water, and they rotate seasonal options to keep things fresh. It's got these cosy corners and a log burner that make it ideal for settling in on a chilly evening, and the outdoor beer yards are brilliant for soaking up the sun with a pint in hand. The homemade Scotch eggs and pork pies are a nice bonus if you're peckish, adding a homely feel to the place. On the downside, it's not the spot for a full meal – just basic bar snacks – and it can get lively, so you might struggle for space if it's packed. Still, for anyone who appreciates a proper pint and a bit of history, it's well worth a visit; I'd say it's a hidden gem that balances tradition with a friendly, down-to-earth charm.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of Joule's ales like Pale Ale and Slumbering Monk, plus that classic cask Bass poured straight from the barrel – it's a real treat for any beer enthusiast.
-
The historical atmosphere is charming; it's like stepping back in time with its original brewer's house vibes, cosy snugs, and a log burner that makes winter evenings feel extra welcoming.
-
There are brilliant outdoor beer yards that catch the evening sun, perfect for a relaxed pint when the weather's on your side.
-
Homemade snacks like the landlady's Scotch eggs and pork pies add a lovely touch, making it more than just a place for drinks.
Cons
-
Food options are pretty limited to bar snacks like cobs and crisps, so if you're after a hearty meal, you might need to head elsewhere.
-
It can get quite busy with its buzzy atmosphere, which might make it tricky to find a quiet spot during peak times.
-
Opening hours vary and it's closed one day a week, which could be a nuisance if you're planning a spontaneous visit.

'Must go to pub' in Burton. The Calcutta 1777 ale was sublime and the Green Monkey lager was excellent. A delightful pub and would love to see some live music there.
Amazing pub. It was originally a place where the brewers from Joules brewery gathered to sample their wares, now it's a great pub without a bar in the traditional sense. All of the fabulous Joules ales and draft Bass on gravity. Great atmosphere and decor. See the photo for the history. Recommended.
Gorgeous pub with great selection of beers. Buzzy atmosphere, love it.
Visited burton for the day and this place was by far the highlight.
Absolutely brilliant pub taking you back in time, bit like the Black Country museum in Dudley.
Everything is stuck in time which is awesome, pork pie, cask bass beer, other ales and beers too.
If you’re looking for a pub in burton, this is it.
All 3 staff members we encountered around 4-5 on Saturday were extremely friendly and a credit to the pub.
Great authentic pub, cask beers poured straight from the barrel on stillages behind the bar as well as hand pulls. They have a great choice of beers on and love music. They have bar snacks (pork pie, cobs, crisps etc)
