About This Pub

Ah, The Compasses in Chelmsford is one of those pubs that really shines when it comes to creating a buzzing, inclusive atmosphere – it's dead welcoming for families and even dogs, which is lovely if you're popping in with the little ones or your furry mate. The sports setup is brilliant too, with Sky and TNT broadcasting all the key fixtures, and they've got heaps of events like live music, karaoke, and quizzes to keep the energy high. Throw in a spacious interior, outdoor seating for those nicer days, and games like pool and darts, and you've got a solid spot for a casual get-together. On the downside, though, prices can be a bit steep – think £8 plus for a Prosecco – and there have been a few grumbles about people vaping indoors, which isn't the nicest surprise. Service-wise, it's a mixed bag; some visits go smoothly, but others involve staff who seem a tad off or issues like not being able to get hold of advertised food without booking ahead. All in all, it's worth checking out if you're local and fancy a sporty night out, but maybe keep your expectations in check to avoid any letdowns – it's got that classic pub charm with a few rough edges.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a welcoming spot that's family and dog friendly, making it great for a relaxed outing with loved ones.
  • Fantastic for sports fans with Sky Sports and TNT showing all the big games, so you won't miss a moment.
  • Lively events like live music, karaoke, and quiz nights keep things entertaining and add to the fun vibe.
  • Spacious interior with outdoor seating and a car park, perfect for groups or when you fancy a bit of fresh air.
  • Fun games area with a pool table and darts room, ideal for a casual game while enjoying a drink.
  • A wide selection of lagers, wines, and spirits to suit most tastes, especially if you're after something straightforward.
Cons
  • Drinks can be quite pricey, like shelling out over £8 for a glass of Prosecco, which might sting a bit.
  • Some reports of vaping inside, which can be off-putting and spoil the atmosphere for others.
  • Service has its ups and downs, with a few mentions of unhelpful or rude staff that could dampen your visit.
  • Advertised food options, like the Sunday roast, aren't always available without pre-booking, leading to disappointment.
  • No proper garden area, so if you're hoping for a scenic outdoor spot, it might not quite hit the mark.

Venue is ok but no garden area and expensive drinks, £8.20 for a GLASS of Prosecco! Should be ashamed.

Really disappointed with the service at this pub. I went for lunch with my family on a Sunday. We couldn't order the roast that was advertised very big on the blackboard near entrance. It has to be pre-booked apparently. We decided to ordered from the menu but the guy from the bar said that half of what's on the menu is not available. So we left to choose from 4 options. After ordering whatever was available it took more than 1 hour to have fish and chips served (and a tablespoon of peas floating in tiny bowl half full of water - disgusting) pub was mostly empty, duhh. It is unbelievable how bad the food and service was in this place.

Confronted with absolute bewilderment because I wanted to create an alcohol free cocktail... bewilderment turned to passive aggression...then when the penny finally dropped as to what I wanted, the lack of people...poor attitude from bar staff and the fact attitude continued meant a swift exit for me the dog and the chazmeister ...we only went there to play pool! Found suitable welcome at the Chelmer inn...free soft drinks... fairly priced pool and tolerance of a bouncy puppy what more can you ask for.!
