About This Pub

Ah, The Christmas Steps – it's one of those cosy Bristol spots that really stands out for all the right reasons, but isn't without its little niggles. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, the food is a real winner; think hearty Sunday roasts with plenty on your plate and flavours that linger, or even tasty pub grub like vegan burgers and mac & cheese that hit the mark. Paired with a solid range of real ales and wines, it's easy to see why it's a go-to for a good meal and a drink. The staff often come across as friendly and eager to help, adding to that welcoming vibe, and the atmosphere with its great music makes it feel like a proper lively hangout. On the downside, though, service isn't always seamless – you might wait a bit in busier areas, and the drinks can sting the wallet a touch. Plus, if you're up for a quieter evening, the younger crowd might make it feel a bit energetic for your taste. All in all, it's a solid choice for a fun pub crawl or a meal with mates, just keep those points in mind for a smoother visit!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, especially the Sunday roast with generous portions and delicious flavours that leave you wanting more
  • They've got a cracking selection of real ales and wines that are top quality and really hit the spot
  • The staff are generally lovely and helpful, making you feel welcome and looked after
  • It's got a warm, buzzing atmosphere with fantastic music and a neat setup that makes for a great night out
Cons
  • Service can be a bit hit or miss, like it took a while to get noticed on the ground floor while it was better upstairs
  • The drinks are on the pricey side, which might make you think twice if you're watching the pennies
  • It seems to attract a younger crowd, so if you're after a more relaxed vibe, it might not feel quite right

A lovely old pub in Bristol City centre, Excellent tasty Sunday lunch, good quality real ales and wines, lovely helpful staff, highly recommend, but do book if you want to eat Sunday lunch as it is popular.

Interesting location, and pub. Entered on ground floor, took a while for staff to realise we were there. Upstairs service was much better. Lots of chatting staff, for size of pub/restaurant. Beers and wines expensive. We are elderly customers, 12noon it was obvious many younger persons were visiting, thats ok, and nor were we treated any differently by staff. Didn't stay long as we were 'on-tour'. Wife described outdoor patio area as basic.

This was one of the Timeout top pubs to visit in Bristol, we were not far away from it so we tried it, and it was an overall good experience : the Moor bitter was very good, the place is very neat and had lots of chairs and tables (a bar is also available upstairs too) and staff is very friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed our drinks sitting outside, watching people passing by while relaxing. We also loved the black walls of its building, it looks like it's been charred or smoked 😀

This is one of the loveliest pubs I've visited in a long time. The food was incredible—the vegan hamburger, mac & cheese, and croquettes were absolutely delicious. The drinks were crafted to perfection, and the service made us feel like VIPs. And the music? Absolutely fantastic.
