About This Pub

Ah, The Cheshire Cat – it's one of those pubs that just warms your heart from the get-go. I've got to say, the food here is spot on; whether it's a scrumptious Sunday roast or a fresh salad that's full of flavour, everything feels homemade and satisfying. The staff are an absolute joy, always chipping in with a genuine smile and a bit of chat that makes the whole experience feel personal and welcoming. Then there's the historic setting, built on an old battlefield site and all restored to keep that authentic country feel, complete with beautiful gardens for sunny days and crackling log fires when it's chilly – it's just perfect for unwinding. On the downside, it does tend to get busy, especially on evenings or weekends, so popping in without a booking might mean a short wait, and it's not slap bang in the city centre, which could be a minor niggle if you're not up for a drive. All in all, though, it's a brilliant spot for a catch-up with mates or a quiet meal, and I'd recommend giving it a go for that mix of good grub, lovely surroundings, and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps folks coming back.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious, with hearty classics like Sunday roasts and fresh salads that really hit the spot.
  • Service is warm and attentive, with staff who go the extra mile to make you feel welcome and looked after.
  • The historic atmosphere is charming, set in a beautifully restored building with lovely gardens and cosy log fires for a proper country pub vibe.
  • It's brilliantly dog-friendly, making it a great choice for a relaxed day out with your four-legged friend.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy at times, so you might need to book ahead to avoid any waiting around.
  • The location's a bit out on the edge of Chester, which could feel a tad remote if you're after something more central.

Busy Wednesday night, didn't book but waited and got seated straight away. Great service and a good choice on the menu. Enjoyed the food and atmosphere.

Stephanie Sashia & team Cheshire Cat made my stay welcome, comfortable and dinner outstanding. Location location perfect for business or leisure quiet by canal and fab gardens to sit out for breakfast and dinner. Best salad I’ve ever had . Deserves 5 stars +

Wow. First time here and will be back again for sure! Wonderful staff who couldn’t have been more lovely along with a fine selection of delicious cask beers topped off with an absolutely scrumptious Sunday roast, one veggie, one meat, both amazing. Thank you so much. Even got a discount by using the app! Happy days by the canal.

We were very pleased with the service and meal. Laura was a very helpful person, her smile was very genuine. Unfortunately she didn’t know how to provide the origin of the amazing chicken liver pate. The pub is very tranquil with beautiful decorations.

Excellent food and helpful staff. Served by Katie who was pleasant and chatty. We had scallops/prawn starter and sticky chicken then mains both had roast. One pork belly and one trio of meats all cooked fantastic and brilliant size portions. Lots of veg (nit pictured as forgot!) Will definitely return.
