About This Pub

Ah, The Chequers Beerhouse – it's one of those pubs that just warms your cockles the second you step inside. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute stars, always up for a chat and making sure everyone feels welcome, which really sets the tone for a great night. The beers on offer are spot on, with a brilliant range of cask ales that are kept in prime condition, and the cosy atmosphere, complete with a fire on those nippy evenings, makes it ideal for sinking into a corner with friends. It's tucked away in the older part of Stevenage, which gives it that authentic feel, and it's conveniently close to the town centre and station, so you can nip in without any hassle. On the flip side, it's a shame there's no website to get the lowdown beforehand, and the operating hours look a bit muddled, which might mean double-checking before you head out. Plus, if you're after somewhere with more of a food focus, it might not hit the mark as it's all about the drinks and the craic. Overall, with a solid 4.3 rating from folks who've been, it's clear this place does the basics brilliantly and leaves you with a smile – I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone looking for a proper, down-to-earth pub experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers and ales, always kept in top condition – perfect for a proper pint lover.
  • The atmosphere is cosy and inviting, especially with the fire going on chillier days, and it's got a lovely little outside area for when the weather's nice.
  • It's in a great spot in the old part of Stevenage, not far from the town centre and station, making it easy to pop in after a day out.
  • The place is spotlessly clean, right down to the toilets, which is always a bonus when you're out for a few drinks.
Cons
  • There isn't a website listed, so it's a bit tricky to check out the latest details or menu before you go.
  • The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent from what's listed, which might catch you out if you're planning a visit.
  • It might feel a bit traditional for those after something more modern or with a wider food selection, as it's more focused on drinks and chat.

Wow - what a fantastic little pub THIS is. Impeccably friendly service, little outside area, a myriad of marvellous libations, but the real winner here is the punters - such lovely, friendly, helpful people. No wonder so many Stevenagians recommended this place during my short stay.

A Good Range of Cask Beer kept in Good Condition. A Traditional pub with locals. Staff very pleasant. In the Old part of Stevenage but not too far from the Nee Town Centre and Rail Station.

Great little pub, lovely atmosphere with very good location if coming from the new town! Good selection of beers and ales. The decor on the walls is really cool with some interesting items linked to the local area. Also as a side note, the toilets are lovely and clean (a notable relief compared to the Red Lion up the road.)
