About This Pub
Ah, The Chequers in Bath – it's one of those spots that really captures the essence of a traditional pub while adding a bit of flair. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, it's brilliant for a relaxed get-together, especially if you're after a solid Sunday roast. The food can be spot on when it's good, with generous helpings and tasty treats like succulent beef or those famous cheesy leeks that leave you satisfied. Pair that with the friendly service and a great selection of drinks, and you've got a place that feels like a proper community hub in the beautiful Georgian city. On the flip side, though, it's not without its flaws – some have noticed a slide in quality lately, with things like overcooked dishes or gravy that's a tad too thin, and let's be honest, the prices do add up quickly. Still, if you're up for a meal with mates and don't mind splashing out a little, it's worth a visit for the atmosphere alone. Overall, it's a solid choice in Bath, but maybe keep expectations in check based on the mixed feedback floating about.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Sunday roasts are still a highlight, with generous portions and some truly delicious options like the beef and cheesy leeks that keep folks coming back.
-
The staff are always friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's got a lovely atmosphere, blending that classic pub charm with a touch of elegance in the heart of Bath's Georgian streets.
-
The drinks selection is spot on, with traditional ales, a vibrant wine list, and some chic cocktails that pair perfectly with the food.
Cons
-
Prices can feel a bit steep, especially for the Sunday roast at around £19.75, which might not sit well if you're watching the pennies.
-
Some recent changes, like the new chef, have led to inconsistencies – things like overcooked meat or watery gravy that don't quite hit the mark anymore.
-
A few folks have mentioned the food arriving tepid, which takes the edge off an otherwise enjoyable meal.
-
It's not living up to its former glory as the absolute best in Bath for everyone, based on a couple of mixed experiences shared lately.

I was taken here as a surprise by my partner whilst we stayed in Bath. I was really impressed the food was amazing they had maintained the atmosphere of a local pub. Delicious food, friendly staff and good wine. A little more on the expensive side but for a romantic or intimate dinner you won’t be disappointed. I don’t know how it would be on a busy night but midweek it was very pleasant.
I’d say this is a 3.5 star restaurant. The Sunday roast was good, but not great. My wife and I found our meals to be tepid in temperature. Almost like it was under a heat lamp prior to serving. The flavours etc were good otherwise. Service was satisfactory. The chocolate mousse was the star.
Rightfully crowned the BEST Sunday roast in Bath 👑 we had the Beef and the Veggie roast as well as some starters and the famous cheesy leeks. A lot of food as everything is generous portions so I do advise to order less but we wanted to try as much as possible during our short visit in Bath and none of it disappointed us! Advice: Book ahead as they tend to be fully booked on Sundays. The team offered us amazing service, very kind and attentive. Thank you Chequers ♥️
Quite possibly the best food I have ever eaten. The venison was cooked perfectly with the accompaniments all adding delicate touches to enhance the flavour. Yet despite the quality of the main I would have to say that it was beaten by my scallops starter. I’ve had scallops many times but never as perfectly intensely flavoured and melt in the mouth gorgeous as these were.
Service was attentive, informative and friendly making the whole experience- I was there for my 60th birthday- memorable and perfect.
If only they had had a bitter available but I can’t begrudge the place too much when everything else was so good.
Came here with the hubby for a Sunday roast in Bath! It was definitely one of the best roasts we've had in the UK. We started with the scallops with garlic butter and herbs topped with a toasted bread crumb. For mains, we both ordered the pork belly roast and for dessert the sticky toffee pudding.
My favourite of the three was the scallops. Mind you, I am a huge fan of seafood, so I'm always a bit biased towards my seafood. The scallops were perfectly cooked, with a nice butter and herb flavour. The toasted bread crumbs added a nice texture contrast.
The pork roast was super tender - you can pull it apart with your fork. The skin had a nice crisp to the skin but was a bit on the sticky side as opposed to a dry crisp. The pork had a mild Asian five spice flavour.
We also had a side of cheesey leeks, which wasn't as heavy as we thought it would be. It was our first time having cheesey leeks and we definitely enjoyed it.
The sticky toffee pudding was topped with a ginger flavoured ice cream, which was slightly different. The sticky toffee pudding was served warm so the contrast in temperature between the pudding and the ice cream was nice. I think I would prefer a clotted cream or vanilla flavoured ice cream instead of the ginger.
The staff here were super friendly and attentive. We definitely enjoyed our roast here and would recommend checking this place out!
