About This Pub

Ah, The Chequers in Walthamstow – it's one of those classic East London boozers that's slap bang in the middle of the high street, making it super convenient for a quick pint or a bite. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the beers are a real highlight; they've got this rotating lineup of local ales that just taste spot on, and it's clear they know their stuff when it comes to a good brew. Pair that with some solid pub classics like those massive cheeseburgers and ribs, and you've got a place that feels just right for a relaxed evening. The live sports on the big screens are another winner – it's buzzing when there's a match on, which really brings people together. On the downside, though, there are times when the food doesn't quite live up to the hype, with a few tales of burnt bits or greasy plates that might put you off ordering seconds. Then there's that service charge that seems to appear out of nowhere, which feels a bit cheeky if it's not mentioned, and the outside area lacking any tunes makes it feel a smidge flat when you're trying to soak up the vibe. All in all, it's a decent spot for what it is, but I'd say go in with your eyes open – the good bits make it worth a visit, while the niggles remind you it's not perfect. If you're in E17, give it a go and see for yourself; it's all about that balanced pub experience, innit?

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The selection of fine beers and local ales is spot on – always a treat to try rotating options from breweries like Five Points.
  • The pub grub hits the mark with generous portions of classics like cheeseburgers and pork ribs, making it a great spot for a satisfying meal.
  • Live sports on multiple big screens from Sky, BT, and Amazon Prime add real excitement, perfect for catching the game with friends.
  • The garden area with working heaters is a lovely touch, especially on cooler evenings, giving a nice outdoor vibe in the heart of Walthamstow.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss, with some reports of burnt or overly oily dishes that leave a bit of a bad taste.
  • Unexpected service charges popping up on the bill without being mentioned upfront – it's a sneaky one that might catch you off guard.
  • The lack of music outside really dampens the atmosphere, making it feel a tad quiet and less lively than you'd hope.
  • Little niggles like finding lipstick on glasses show that attention to detail isn't always there, which can spoil the experience.

We were looking for a close-by pub with good food, and we weren't disappointed. We had the cheeseburger and the pork ribs, both excellent. The portions were large and the service was quick. The menu is small enough to streamline the service but with plenty of choices for various tastes and preferences. Being there on a Thursday evening also meant that we avoided the weekend rush, although the pub was busy enough.

Went here for some food and drinks on a Sunday, tried to order food at the bar but were instead told to sit down and order at a table. After we left we realised we had each been charged a service charge if around £4 each. So is this a pub or a restaurant?! And also customers MUST be told of this extra charge and it MUST be optional, and not hidden in your bill. Spoiled what was a nice afternoon sadly.

The only reason this is 4 and not 5 is because there's NO MUSIC outside. It really diminishes any sort of atmosphere, even if they played something quietly it would really make a difference. It's a really cool pub otherwise!

Service was good, but the food was awful 😕. Ordered the Butter Milk Chicken Burger from the menu. It was burnt and dripping in oil (and the bun was stone cold). The fries were ok and the food came out in a timely fashion, but that couldn't save my complaint. Asked for and received a refund without any hassle or arguments. Really disappointed the new management aren't setting higher standards and securing repeat customers (through delicious dinners) 🙄

This is a really god bar. They have a beautiful garden area with heaters that actually work. The music doesn't play outside even on low because of neighbours but if they had some kind of music outside, it would open a lot of opportunities. I found lipstick on my wine glass, but I cleaned it off... not what you would expect if glasses were clean. This bar has so much potential it is mesmerising... from the space to colour coordination, this bar could become something really special. Barstaff are friendly and happy, which is expected from any public house. 3*'s from me, but room for improvement.
