Oh, what a treat The Cavern of the Curious Gnome is when it's open – it's one of those spots that just sticks in your mind for all the right reasons. Picture this: you wander through a wine bar and up the stairs to find a cosy nook packed with an incredible range of beers, from rich Belgian brews to crisp German lagers and fine British ales; it's a proper paradise for anyone who appreciates a good pint. The staff are absolute stars, always ready with a smile and some insider tips on what to try, and the food like those cheeseboards or chicken and frites adds a lovely touch to the experience. But, let's be honest, it's not without its drawbacks – it's closed right now for some necessary fixes, which means you might have to hold off or check out their nearby Gnome and Away for similar vibes. And if you're not into the gnome-filled, eccentric atmosphere or prefer something a bit more straightforward, it might not quite win you over. All in all, it's a fabulous little hideaway that deserves a visit once it's back, especially if you're after that unique, memorable pub feel in Chester.

Cons
-

It's currently closed for essential structural repairs, which is a real shame as you'll have to wait to visit

-

Not dog-friendly at all, so if you're out with your furry mate, you might need to look elsewhere

Visited two times this last week. Great selection of beers, informed staff and a great sound track. Did anyone mention the quirky decor? Bonkers.
It took two attempts but I finally found this brilliant and quirky bar.
You enter via the wine bar downstairs and it’s almost like you’ve entered a secret bar.
The beer list is long and the decor, furniture and gnome based theme makes for a brilliant experience.
The two beers I tried were faultless and I don’t think I stopped smiling from the second I entered until the second I left.
Great place for Belgian Beers with a large selection to choose from. Plenty of seating on two levels and the staff were friendly. Would visit again !
First Class Quirky Beer House. My German beer came in a frozen glass stein. BBQ Chicken chips and Mayo off scale. Only fault was no cooking bitter but all the plus points made up for that
Don’t come to Chester without checking out this place. Quirky doesn’t do it justice. Mushrooms for bar stools and an enormous gnome next to the bar all adds to making it extra special while you sup some very fine ales and continental beers.
If ale isn’t you’re thing then this probably ain’t your place but it does sit above Paysan a very fine wine bar and there’s always a game of “spot the most expensive wine” on the three enormous chalk boards as you visit the toilets shared by both bars.
We didn’t eat here so can’t review the food it smells and looks delicious.
A great place to spend an hour (or several)
