About This Pub
Ah, the Bacon Arms – what a gem in Newbury, isn't it? I've got to say, stepping into this place feels like wandering into a bit of history with its 17th-century vibes, all wrapped up in a cosy, inviting atmosphere that's just perfect for sinking into a chair with friends over a good chat and a cold one. The staff really shine here; they're so personable and eager to help, whether you're just popping in for a quick bite or settling in for the evening – it's that kind of service that makes you want to come back time and again. The food's a winner too, with those traditional pub dishes and tempting deals that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank, and if you're staying over, the rooms are a nice blend of character and comfort, making it easy to unwind after a day out exploring nearby spots like Highclere Castle. On the flip side, it's worth noting that the kitchen's had its moments where things aren't quite ready, so you might find yourself with fewer options than expected, and parking can be a tad tricky with what seems like a few local secrets to figure out. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint or a meal, but keep those little niggles in mind if you're after something seamless – I'd still recommend giving it a go for that genuine pub feel.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always going above and beyond to make you feel right at home – it's like chatting with old mates over a pint.
-
The pub has a lovely historical charm from its 17th-century roots, combined with a warm atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up or a hearty meal.
-
They serve up delicious traditional pub grub and classics that hit the spot, especially with those daily deals and Sunday lunches that feel just right.
-
If you're looking for a spot to stay, the refurbished en-suite rooms offer a comfortable mix of old-school character and modern convenience, ideal for a quick overnight.
-
It's conveniently located near attractions like Highclere Castle, making it a brilliant base for exploring the area without any fuss.
Cons
-
There have been occasional hitches with the kitchen, like when it's not fully up and running, which might mean limited food options on certain days.
-
Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – one mention of a 'car park cheat' suggests there might be some quirks or hidden tricks to navigating it, which could be a minor annoyance.
-
As a moderate-priced spot, it might not suit those after something super budget-friendly, especially if you're planning a longer stay or a big night out.

Spent the night in one of the rooms here as well as a great evening enjoying the establishment. The staff were extremely personable and professional. They were able to accommodate all our needs. Would highly recommend to others and would happily make many return visits.
An excellent local homely style pub and its staff are welcoming and friendly who go above and beyond to ensure that everything is the best it can be for your stay.
Having recently taken over Julian and his team are working hard to get the kitchen running and have food available in the future.
If you are local or just passing through I highly recommend dropping in and checking this pub out for yourselves.
I posted a review but it did not show. I came in last night for a couple of beers. Was really impressed by the welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. I will definitely be back now I know the car park cheat! Best wishes.
We ate in The Greek table on a Saturday afternoon and we absolutely loved everything - the vibe, food, and the experience. We came here for the meze, and we got so full from the food servings. We loved how accommodating and helpful the staff members were, even explaining all the food as they were served as well as which sauce complements them - something that we did not experience in Cyprus. Overall great food and experience, will definitely come back!
Fantastic evening at the Bacon! We had seen then new menu and couldn't wait to try it. Wonderful service, very friendly staff who knew the menu very well! The food was delicious, my personal favourite was the prawn starter. Can't wait to return again with friends.
