About This Pub

Ah, The Bowling Green – it's one of those pubs that just draws you in with its warm, welcoming feel, you know? From what I've gathered, the team there, especially folks like Aaron, are proper gems; they're polite, efficient, and really make an effort to keep things running smoothly, which is just what you want after a long day. The place is always hopping with a great atmosphere – think packed but in a fun way, where you can enjoy a pint, have a laugh, and even try your hand at the free dart boards. And the food? Well, the burgers sound like absolute winners, packed with options and flavours that won't disappoint, all at prices that keep it accessible for a casual night out. On the downside, though, I've heard a few tales of payment woes; it's cards or exact change only, which can be a right nuisance if you're fumbling for coins or notes. Still, overall, it's a solid spot for a get-together – just pop in prepared, and you're in for a treat!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, always going the extra mile to make you feel at home – it's like chatting with old mates behind the bar.
  • It's kept spotlessly clean, which is a real treat for a pub, especially one that gets busy.
  • The atmosphere is buzzing and lively, perfect for a good night out with friends, and it's got fun extras like free dart boards to keep things entertaining.
  • Prices are spot on for a budget-friendly evening – you get great value on drinks and food without it costing a fortune.
  • The food's a highlight, with cracking burgers and other grub that hits the spot after a few pints.
Cons
  • There can be a bit of a faff with payments; they only take cards or exact change, which might leave you scratching your head if you're not prepared.
  • Not every visit is flawless, as some folks have mentioned occasional service hitches that could dampen the mood.
  • It gets packed quickly, so you might end up waiting a tick for your round, even if the team are on top form.

I went into this pub tonight 21.15 on 6/6/2025 I ordered a pint of Cruze Campo. I had the correct change luckily. I was told from the baman that he could only serve me again for another pint if I have the correct change. They appear to only accept card only unless you have the correct change. Wow great way to lose customers. Avoid if you have cash or are not carrying the correct change. I feel this is extremely biased towards cash paying customers. I will of course take my business else where.

Before the reopening, I was slightly put off with attending from what I heard about the last owners. However every time I’ve gone in, Aaron and the team are always so lovely and polite. It’s probably the cleanest pub students visit, especially for the great prices. It’s quickly became one of the pubs I often visit.

Since Aaron and the team took over, the pub has an amazing atmosphere. It’s always packed, but even then the staff are on it and service is great. Really clean and just a great space to be. I defo love playing on the free dart boards and having a pint and sometimes some gorgeous food!

Had a great time here on Saturday night with my brother in law after travelling up for a rugby match. The atmosphere was great, the owner and his son are Great people and lovely hosts! I'd recommend to anyone passing by to stop in for a drink (we didn't eat there but I wouldn't hesitate to if we were out for a meal) ... We unfortunately lost our match Sharks v Leicester 🙈 but the boys at the Bowling Green made us feel much better! Good genuine family run establishment! Keep up the good work boys and we'll definitely stop in when we do our next rugby match there 👍

Burger and drink Tuesday, what a burger it was! Absolutely epic. I used to go regularly when I was working at one of the student accomodations near by so it was good to see the manager still there. Back to the food, I ordered cheeseburger with double patty's, (you can have up to 4!!) Added bacon. Having been unimpressed with burgers - I had not eaten a pub burger in about a year, this was one of the best burgers I've eaten in a long long long time. The wings unfortunately were either overcooked or reheated, we ordered two different ones but both had the same overcooked / reheated taste. Won't be ordering them again any time soon. Atmosphere is always fantastic in this place, they have a pool table too! Looking forward to trying new dishes, see you again soon Bowling Green. (Watch this space, for more pics)
