About This Pub
Ah, The Black Horse – it's one of those classic Wetherspoon spots that really hits the mark for a laid-back pub outing. I have to say, the beer garden is a real gem; it's spacious, with that added bonus of a bowling green, making it ideal for catching up with mates on a sunny day. The prices are spot on too – you won't break the bank for a decent pint or a meal, and the food usually comes out hot and flavoursome without much wait. The building itself has that lovely mock Tudor vibe, and it's handy having disabled access and free parking right outside. On the flip side, though, it's a bit of a shame about the tables; they often stay sticky and cluttered after previous groups, which can make you hesitate before settling in. Plus, the menu feels a tad outdated, and while food is generally good, there have been a few off moments like undercooked dishes – but to be fair, the team steps up quickly if you point it out. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, especially if you're after value for money, just keep an eye on those little niggles to make the most of it.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer garden is absolutely superb, with plenty of seating and even its own bowling green – perfect for a relaxed afternoon out.
-
Drinks are incredibly affordable, just what you'd expect from a Wetherspoon, making it a brilliant spot for a budget-friendly pint.
-
The food is generally spot on – hot, tasty, and served quickly, with a warm welcome that makes you feel right at home.
-
It's got a lovely historic building with great disabled access and free parking, which adds to the overall convenience.
Cons
-
Tables often go uncleaned after folks leave, leaving them sticky and messy, which can put a bit of a dampener on the experience.
-
The menu could do with a refresh; it's a bit stale and some options, like the half chicken, might not be everyone's cup of tea anymore.
-
Every now and then, there are slip-ups with the food, like undercooked items, though the staff are quick to sort it out if you mention it.

Hard to imagine this Mock Tudor Enormo Spoons only dates back to 1929. Everything you come to expect in a Wetherspoons and thus one is in the Good Beer Guide in 2025. The beer garden is superb, the pub even has its own bowling green.
Lovely public house always a warm welcome food and beer 🍺 Lovely disabled access available parking outside car park free indoor and outdoor seating and a bowls club outdoor the photos is the 1960s how I remember it also used to drink with Dave who passed recently janet nash and her son elliot and sean keep up the good work 👏 🙌
A lovely pub and the best looking building in Northfield. The drinks are such a great price they are not over priced like many pubs.
The food is always hot and cooked well and don't take long to be served to you but I do think the menu could do with a change. It was a bad move taking the half a chicken off the menu. If anyone wants anything like a roast we'll they don't serve nothing like that . Otherwise the pub is great so don't go changing nothing but the food menu
Having not been here for a while we popped in for a tea time dinner, food was good, hot & tasty, the only real downfall here is the tables never get cleaned after previous diners, sticky to touch & dropped food left on tables, I observed this when diners left that staff quickly take plates & drink glasses away but never wipe tables over for next users, the table next to us had 3 peas & 2 chips left on the table but crockery & glasses removed. Please why can't the staff wipe tables with spray & cloth ready for next users????. Such a let down as cannot fault food & selection of drinks.
Lovely seating in the back garden and great service.. the food however. Usually a spoons never disappoints but my chicken burger came out not thoroughly defrosted in the bun. Sent it back and they changed it with no questions asked. Everyone else’s food was fine so probably just a one off.
