About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about The Black Country Arms – it's one of those pubs that really stands out in Walsall, with its rich history dating back to 1627 and that Grade II listed charm. I love how they've got this enormous array of real ales and ciders on offer, all displayed on a handy digital board, so you're never short of choices when you're deciding on your next round. The atmosphere is just spot on; it's spacious with high ceilings and a welcoming feel that makes it easy to settle in, whether you're watching the footie on the TVs or enjoying one of their board game nights for a bit of extra fun. The staff are always up for a chat and know their beers inside out, which is a real plus when you're trying something new. On the food front, when the kitchen's open, you've got some solid options like fish and chips that are hot, tasty, and generously portioned, though it does come at a moderate price that might add up if you're not careful. That said, it's a shame the kitchen shuts on Mondays and Sundays, leaving you with just bar snacks, and if you're not into real ales, you might find the selection a tad limited compared to what you'd get elsewhere. Overall, it's a brilliant spot for ale enthusiasts, but worth keeping those opening hours in mind to avoid any disappointments – I'd definitely recommend it for a proper pub experience in the area.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant, with a massive range of real ales and ciders that changes regularly – it's like a treasure trove for anyone who loves a good pint.
  • The pub has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for relaxing in a historic setting that's been around since 1627, making you feel right at home even in the town centre.
  • Friendly staff who really know their stuff; they'll help you pick the perfect drink and make the whole experience more enjoyable.
  • They've got fun events like board game nights, which adds a nice community vibe and keeps things lively without being overwhelming.
  • When the kitchen is open, the food hits the spot with tasty options at moderate prices, and it's conveniently located near the station for an easy visit.
Cons
  • The kitchen's closed on Mondays and Sundays, so you're stuck with just bar snacks on those days if you're hoping for a proper meal.
  • Food can be a bit on the pricey side, which might put some off if you're just popping in for a quick bite.
  • It's more focused on real ales, so if you prefer commercial beers, you might not find as many options to your taste.
  • There are quite a few steps and the toilets are upstairs, which could be tricky for anyone with mobility issues.

What a great pub. Didn’t expect to stumble on such a great place. Lovely building and interior and an unbelievable selection of beers to choose from. A digital display helps you choose as it’s almost impossible to decide! Loads of cask ales. TVs for sport as well.

Beautiful pint selection with an entire digital board displaying such. They host board game nights, have good atmosphere interchange the drinks and flavours they have, friendly staff. Good smoking area, there is also two floors in the pub, quite a few steps including the entrance, toilets upstairs, so unsure if this is accessible to anyone unable to use such.

Lovely classic English pub with an incredible selection of real ales. A stones throw from the town centre, and populated by Walsall fans and away fans alike.

updated Oct 2024 hmm.. they dont sell commerical ales i prefer. but the barman (forgot to ask his name) is knowledgeable about ales available [huge selection] he recommended "fireside" which was a delicious pint for my sweeter tastes [clear and good temp]... but there was only cobs available foodwise (monday evening) standard cobs, not particularly soft, but the onion and cheese is fresh. atmos is ok for a city centre pub, the seats are shiny leather (downstairs) so i found myself slipping off them... not that comfy and the downstairs fireplace is of plastic variety. board games for the kids (and big kids)! nice touch... dog friendly policy sealed the deal. if they served hot food on mondays (this would be 5 star experience). can recommend.

This is the best place in Walsall to go to for food and drinks. We ordered the fish and chips. It was a bit pricey. The portions were good. The food was hot and delicious. I highly recommend this location.
