About This Pub

Ah, the Red Lion – it's one of those classic pubs that you hear about and think, 'This could be a great spot for a catch-up with mates.' From what I've gathered, it's got some real winners going for it, like their delicious food options that cater to all sorts, from hearty Sunday lunches to vegan choices, and the value is spot on with those tempting offers. The staff can be absolute gems, dishing out warm welcomes and smiles that make you feel welcome right away. Plus, with a spacious beer garden and being dog-friendly (mostly), it's ideal for a sunny afternoon pint or a family meal. But, let's be honest, it's not all pints and roses – I've seen mentions of food coming out cold or lacking flavour, which would put a dampener on any visit. The inside might not have that cosy, inviting feel you'd hope for, and those odd rules about where dogs can go could be a bit frustrating. Service-wise, it's reliable but not always full of energy, and the dated toilets are a minor niggle. Overall, if you're in Solihull and fancy a pub that's generally reliable for a good time, give it a go – just keep expectations balanced and maybe check the menu in advance to avoid any surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally delicious with a great variety, including options for vegetarians, vegans, kids, and special Sunday menus – perfect for a hearty meal with friends.
  • It's got a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with staff who often provide top-notch service and a smile, making you feel right at home.
  • Excellent value for money, especially with offers on starters and desserts, and it's dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry mate along for the outing.
  • Spacious beer garden and free parking make it a convenient spot to relax, whether it's for a quick drink or a full meal.
  • Easy to reach, just off the M42, and it's open every day, ideal for spontaneous get-togethers.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss – some visits end with cold or tasteless dishes, which is a real shame for a special occasion like Mother's Day.
  • The atmosphere might feel a bit soulless inside, not quite living up to that cosy pub charm you'd expect from the outside.
  • There are quirky rules, like dogs only being allowed on carpeted areas, which could limit where you can sit and enjoy your time.
  • Service isn't always enthusiastic, and little things like delays in getting cutlery or a more upbeat team could make a big difference.
  • Some facilities, like the toilets, are a tad dated, which might detract from the overall experience.

Bank Holiday lunch at the Red Lion in Knowle didn't disappoint. We had the roast beef and vegetarian lasagne which was delicious. The food is always great and good variety on a new spring/summer menu. There is always a nice warm welcome waiting. We'll be back soon!

Great food, great value and great service. Couldn't fault their Sunday lunch at all tbh and had an offer on for reduced price starters and deserts. Live their beer battered mushrooms.....What's not to like. The waitress had great customer focus and service and always had a smile on her face.

Dear Red Lion Team, I wanted to share my experience from our Mother’s Day lunch at your restaurant. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment. The food was inedible—cold, tasteless, and far below expectations for such a special occasion. That said, I do want to acknowledge the staff. The manageress was very apologetic, and both the young waitress and the bar staff were lovely. Their kindness was appreciated, but sadly, it didn’t make up for the poor meal. I hope you take this feedback on board, as we had high hopes for our visit.

A slightly soulless place, which is not what I expected from the outside. They have a strange rule for a "very dog friendly" pub; dogs are only allowed on the carpeted areas and not hard floors. Shame we couldn't sit by the fire with our dogs. Food was fine - formula, but nicely cooked and presented. We all cleared our plates. Locals were friendly but not intrusive.

A nice country feeling pub with excellent food at a good price. Service could have been better in terms of enthusiasm from the team and the provision of cutlery during our meals. Toilets a little dated. Otherwise a good experience overall.
