About This Pub
Ah, The Bellhouse – it's one of those pubs that really captures that classic English countryside feel, nestled in Leigh-on-Sea with its beautiful gardens and woodland views. I have to say, it's an absolute gem for catching up with mates over a pint or enjoying a Sunday roast when it's on point; the staff are always so friendly and on hand to sort out any preferences, which makes you feel right at home. They've got a solid range of drinks and pub favourites that hit the spot, and it's brilliant for organising events with plenty of space indoors and out. That said, I've heard a few tales of the food not quite delivering, like some dishes coming out bland or not as hot as they'd like, which is a shame because it could elevate the whole experience. Overall, it's worth a visit for the atmosphere alone, but maybe keep your expectations in check for the grub and go for the drinks if you're playing it safe – it's all about that balance, isn't it?
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Bellhouse has a truly idyllic setting with scenic gardens and woodland, making it perfect for a relaxing drink or meal outdoors on a sunny day.
-
The staff are incredibly welcoming and accommodating, always ready to handle special requests or allergies, which makes for a pleasant visit.
-
They offer a great selection of classic pub grub and drinks, including hearty Sunday lunches and craft beers on tap – ideal for a traditional get-together.
-
It's well-suited for special occasions, with space for private functions up to 200 people, and lovely features like real fires and wooden beams that add to the cosy charm.
-
With a solid overall rating, it's clear that many folks appreciate the warm atmosphere and it's managed well by the owners.
Cons
-
Some food items can be disappointing, like bland or stale starters, which might leave you wishing for a bit more flavour in your meal.
-
There have been complaints about certain dishes not being up to scratch, such as stodgy wings or lukewarm chips, suggesting inconsistency in the kitchen.
-
While the pub's great for drinks and ambience, the food quality seems to have dipped recently, so it might not always live up to expectations for a full meal.
-
With mixed reviews on the grub, it's worth noting that what works one day might not the next, which could be a letdown if you're planning a big outing.

Went here for first time overall the staff and place was good however the food we ordered was not great, we ordered sharing nachos to begin with which looked good on a plate but tasted of nothing, very bland in taste but the main issue was they was stale when delivered to table I thought is not mention anything and just let it be then the mains turned up and onion rings was literally just batter no actual onion inside, we also ordered the garlic flatbread and that was rock hard when brought out and chewy very difficult to eat, the burgers was ok but overall very overpriced definitely won't be returning to this place due to quality of food and lackluster menu choice for food
Been here twice now on separate visits to Southend on sea and both times the food has been great. A large enough selection to have a choice but not overwhelming. Each time they have asked for allergies or special requirements.
The staff are very kind and accommodating making every request asked of them no trouble.
I would highly recommend going here for some very tasty food which will fill you up.
Amused by the ambience and quality of this gastropub!
All the way from SW for this lovely roast. The expectations could be too high, but it still did surprised me for the positive side.
The red cabbage, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were the best I’ve tried so far.
Please and will come back for sure!
P.S. Sticky toffee pudding was 5/5 ⭐️
Food has gone downhill - the wings were mostly stodgy batter, ended up leaving half of them. For £8 for a starter I’d have expected better.
The haddock and chips were not good either, chips were not hot, and the fish batter was also average. Great for drinks but the food has definitely seen a steady decline as it has become busier
Visited for a Sunday roast with my lady, my father & his partner. We sat outside in the corner beside the pub at a reserved table for 4.
Walking through the interior to our table the pub had a pleasant decor, service from the staff was welcoming & courteous at all times.
