About This Pub

Ah, The Bell Inn – it's one of those places that really sticks with you, tucked away in the lovely village of Horndon on the Hill. From what I've gathered chatting about it with mates, it's got this brilliant old-world charm with open fires and a proper pub feel that makes you want to settle in for the evening. The food is a standout; it's fresh, seasonal, and changes daily, so you're always in for a treat without it feeling repetitive. We've heard it's won some serious awards, which isn't surprising given how highly it's spoken of. The rooms are another highlight, full of personality and modern touches that make for a comfortable stay, and it's spot on for events or just enjoying the courtyard on a sunny day. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – prices can sting a bit, especially if you're going for something like Sunday lunch and it doesn't quite hit the mark. Service can be hit or miss too, with a few tales of it being slower than ideal or not as warm as the atmosphere suggests. Still, overall, it's a gem worth visiting for a relaxed night out or a getaway; just keep those little niggles in mind and you'll have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with a warm and welcoming vibe in this historic 15th-century coaching inn – it's like stepping into a cosy slice of the past.
  • The food is top-notch, using fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients, with a daily changing menu that keeps things exciting and has earned it rave reviews in guides like The Sunday Times and Good Pub Guide.
  • Rooms are full of character, blending historical charm with modern comforts, making it a brilliant spot for a stay or even hosting events like weddings and gatherings.
  • They've got a lovely courtyard that's perfect for enjoying the sunshine, plus a great selection of ales and wines that add to the proper pub feel.
Cons
  • Prices can be a bit steep, especially for meals like Sunday lunch, which some folks find doesn't quite live up to the cost.
  • Service might occasionally be slow or not as friendly as you'd hope, which can put a damper on the experience.
  • There are a few minor niggles with the rooms, like curtains letting in too much light, which might disrupt a good night's sleep.

Room was fantastic but it lost a star 'cos the curtains let in too much light in the morning. Atmosphere and welcome in the pub was"top notch". Restaurant was excellent.

Average sunday lunch at a high price, not recommend at all. The food was okay but far inferior to many other places around, examples being the roslin, church St tavern etc. not acceptable at this price (30 quid for lamb). Service was slow and not particularly friendly. The best part was the pub interior which was very nice. Also I would add for any vegetarians such as my mother, the main option was ridiculous! A piece of brocolli with a couple of small additions for 22 quid!!

I started coming here 30 years ago, and over that time I have never had the same dish twice because the menu changes every day and I have never had a sub standard dining experience. The service is well versed ans perfectly timed and the food is as good as a high end London restaurant at a local price all situated in a family run traditional British pub dating back hundreds of years. The Bell Inn has an excellent wine list with bottles of fine wines that are very good value for money. You don’t mind stretching out on a bottle of somthing special because you are not getting ripped off with inflated prices. Personally it’s my favourite place to eat in Essex, it’s been consistent for decades and long may it continue!

Had a excellent meal there for Mothers day. Very good menu. Food was taste and well presented, hot when served. Lovely old world pub, well worth a visit.

We had an amazing New Year’s Eve at The Bell Inn in Horndon! From the moment we arrived, the warm, welcoming atmosphere of this traditional country pub set the tone for a fantastic evening. With its crackling open fires, charming historic feel, and friendly staff, it was the perfect place to celebrate. The food was absolutely delicious, with a well-thought-out menu showcasing high-quality ingredients and expert cooking. The service was attentive and friendly, making the night even more special. The entertainment was brilliant, creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere – the perfect balance for a New Year’s celebration. But The Bell Inn isn’t just great for special occasions – their legendary Sunday lunches and themed events are hugely popular too, and for good reason! Whether you’re stopping by for a casual meal or a big celebration, this place always delivers on great food, great service, and a truly authentic pub experience. Highly recommend – we’ll definitely be back!
