About This Pub

Oh, you know, if you're after a proper traditional pub experience, The Beacon Hotel really hits the spot – it's got that authentic Victorian charm that makes you feel right at home, with its listed building and cosy little rooms branching off a central corridor. I love how they've kept things so true to the past; it's like nipping back to the 1800s for a pint, minus any of the less savoury bits, of course. The beers are a standout – their own Sarah Hughes brews, like the Dark Ruby Mild, are absolute winners, packed with rich flavours and at a price that won't leave you out of pocket. Plus, the outdoor area is a nice touch for a sunny day, with benches and a wee play area for the little ones, making it family-friendly in that regard. On the flip side, it's a bit of a downer that they don't allow dogs; I can see why someone might be miffed if they've trekked over only to be turned away with their pooch. And the opening times can be a tad unpredictable, so you'd want to plan ahead to make sure you're not caught out. All in all, it's a gem for those who appreciate the history and a good ale, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea if you're looking for something more contemporary.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic Victorian atmosphere is absolutely charming – it's like stepping back in time to a bygone era, with its listed building and unchanged interiors that make every visit feel special.
  • Their award-winning beers, especially the Dark Ruby Mild brewed on site, are top-notch and offer great value; you can enjoy a proper pint that's full of flavour without breaking the bank.
  • The staff are welcoming and create a friendly vibe, perfect for a relaxed chat over a drink, and there's a lovely outdoor area with benches and even a small play spot for kids.
  • It's a hidden gem in the Black Country, ideal for walkers or anyone wanting to explore the local history, with its own brewery and a nod to traditional brewing heritage.
Cons
  • They don't allow dogs, which can be a real shame if you're popping in with your furry friend after a walk, as one visitor found out the hard way.
  • The pub has somewhat quirky opening hours that might not suit everyone, so it's wise to double-check before heading over to avoid disappointment.
  • Being a small, old-school spot, it can feel a bit cramped at times, especially if you're after more space or a modern setup.

A properly old school and atmospheric pub with small rooms off a central corridor and bar hatch in the middle. Really is like going back in time, without the smallpox and child labour. Beers brewed behind the pub are tasty and good value, big cobs too. One of the essential visits in the black country.

I travelled all the way from Northampton, via Wolverhampton, where I had drinks in a couple of great dog friendly pubs, to the Beacon Hotel. I arrived at the Beacon Hotel only to be told no dogs are allowed on the premises or even the garden. I am shocked and very disappointed. I asked why and was told that the owner took the decision years ago because customers were not keeping their dogs on a lead and one chewed the furniture. I explained my dogs are kept on a lead and don't chew furniture, but I was still asked to leave immediately. I love Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild, and have drunk it all over the country, and in the Beacon many years ago when I used to regularly travelled between Dudley and Newtown in Powys, and our dog was welcomed. I have vowed to never drink Sarah Hughes beers again in my life. I came all the way from Northampton to have a drink here, and they think it is justified to bar me from entry just because of one irresponsible dog owner. Luckily there is a pub across the road called the White Lion who are dog friendly and they have a nice selection of ales, so Beacon Hotel, up yours! Talking to the regulars in the White Lion it was one dog that misbehaved and caused the owner of the Beacon to ban all dogs. Big mistake. Would he ban all humans if one started a fight or damaged the furniture. I doubt it. This is victimisation of dogs and responsible owners. Finally, I married a lady from the Black Country and hence I know the people here are very friendly and welcoming, so the the owner of this pub is not your typical person from this area. Don't visit this pub, especially if you own a dog. Go across the road to the White Lion who have a great range of well kept real ales and are very human and dog friendly.

Probably the smallest and oldest bar ive seen. First time i visited this place and was quite impressed how spacious it actually was. Had some inhouse ales on tap along with some guest ales all very nice. Has a nice outdoor area with benches with small section for kids to play in as well. Had a few cobs available which seemed to be very tasty indeed. Totally recommend and will 100% be visiting this place again.

Old bar. Don't think I've seen a bar that old, a must see for the younger generation, to experience this blast from the past. Bar with its own brewery. Has there own ales on tap and a couple of guests ales too. Have been meaning to come hear for ages and glad that I finally managed it. This is definitely going into my circulation.
