About This Pub

Ah, The Anchor, it's one of those places that just feels like a proper local haunt in the heart of Oxford's Jericho area. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the atmosphere is spot on – warm, inviting, and perfect for sinking into a comfy chair with friends over a well-poured pint or a glass of wine from their impressive list. The food's a highlight too; they've got this seasonal menu with fresh ingredients and a bit of a Middle Eastern flair that's left a lot of people chuffed, especially the likes of lamb chops or those fresh salads. Service-wise, the team seems genuinely eager to make your visit enjoyable, whether you're just nipping in for a snack or organising a bigger do in their private spaces. On the flip side, it's worth noting that the kitchen doesn't fire up until the evening on weekdays, which might cramp your style if you're after a daytime bite, and there have been a few whispers about the odd dish not quite living up to expectations. All in all, it's a solid choice for pub goers looking for that balance of good grub, drinks, and a welcoming setting – I'd say give it a go, but maybe plan around those hours for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • The food is spot on – fresh, seasonal dishes with a Middle Eastern twist that really hit the mark, like those perfectly cooked lamb chops.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of wines and Wadworth beers that pair beautifully with the menu, ideal for a proper evening out.
  • Friendly and attentive service that makes you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or booking for a special event.
  • The location in Jericho is brilliant, with a cosy garden area and options for private hire, great for gatherings or celebrations.
Cons
  • Kitchen hours are a bit limited on weekdays, only opening from 6pm, so it's not ideal if you're after a lunch stop.
  • Some folks have mentioned occasional issues with certain dishes, so it might not be flawless every time you visit.
  • The bar doesn't kick off until 3pm on weekdays, which could be a downside if you're an early bird looking for a midday drink.

We’re so glad to see The Anchor back open—and under new ownership, it’s better than ever. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the new menu with its Middle Eastern twist is a fantastic upgrade. I had the lamb chops, which were perfectly cooked and full of flavour. My partner ordered the beef, along with the halloumi sticks and chilli garlic prawns to start—all absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The service was friendly and attentive, and it’s clear the team really care about creating a great experience. We’ll definitely be back—The Anchor is quickly becoming a new favourite in the area!

A cozy place for a pint, snack or meal. There was a nice fire going and service was very friendly. I haven't been for a proper meal yet but the beer, nibbles and puddings I've tried thus far have been good. FYI - the chocolate tart is dense.

Great local pub that's experienced a lovely refurbishment that includes a touch of classy and garden style gastro menu. The service is quick and eager to help. Food is light, savory and well presented.

Wonderful gastropub set next to the canal with private dining rooms. At short notice, they arranged 24 of us to have dinner and provided amazing private dining rooms next to each other upstairs. Beautiful setting and great food. Most of the group loved their food, but a few had an issue with their burgers. Wonderful accommodating manager, great range of food including vegan and gluten free options. Good selection of drinks. Nice pub in a gorgeous setting. Small car park to the rear and Street parking available.

We rented one of the upstairs room for a graduation party and had an excellent experience. The room was quiet and good for conversation. Service was friendly and capable, and the food (pictured - salad and roasted carrot dishes) was fresh and delicious. Would go back!
