About This Pub

Ah, the Alma Tavern & Theatre in Clifton is one of those places that really grows on you – it's part of a lovely group of Bristol pubs, and they've got this warm, earthy feel that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates. The food stands out as a winner; I've heard from folks who've raved about the gnocchi and pizzas, all made with fresh, seasonal bits that make for a proper satisfying meal. Throw in a great selection of drinks, from changing gins and beers to nice wines, and you've got something for every taste. The beer garden's a treat on a sunny day, and that little theatre upstairs adds a fun twist for anyone up for a show. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – some have mentioned the bar staff can be a bit offhand or seem like they're not fully engaged, which might leave you feeling a tad overlooked. Still, with solid grub and a high overall rating, it's worth popping in; just keep in mind it might not be the smoothest service every time, and you'll likely have a good night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely cracking, with a lively, bohemian vibe that makes you feel right at home.
  • Food's a real highlight – think delicious stone-baked pizzas, hearty roasts, and seasonal specials that use top-notch local ingredients.
  • Service from the kitchen team is spot on, efficient and quick, even when it's buzzing.
  • They've got a lovely beer garden for soaking up the sun, plus an intimate theatre upstairs for a bit of culture.
  • Prices are reasonable for Bristol, offering great value for the quality of grub and drinks on offer.
Cons
  • Bar staff can sometimes come across as a bit rude or uninterested, which takes the shine off the experience.
  • A few dishes, like the Sunday roast, might end up tasting a tad bland and underwhelming.
  • Service can feel inconsistent, with staff occasionally more focused on their own chats than looking after everyone.

Have been coming to this pub for a while, love the atmosphere and selection of drinks. Food is really nice and service from the chefs is fast. The bar staff really let the side down though, they come across very rude and look as if they don’t want to be there.

Fairly standard Sunday roast, with everything sort of tasting of nothing. I get the sense this place is treated as the bar staffs own personal venue and customers come second (on the Sunday I was in the bar staff were very excited that their friend brought a baby in, and all took turns holding it, forgetting people were at the bar) which is a shame. It has been much better in the past, but I do get the sense there’s no control there. The theatre upstairs is great for a night out, I’d just avoid Sundays.

I had gnocchi which was excellent. The best I’ve ever had. Mostly burgers and pizzas. Reasonably priced for Bristol. Efficient service even though it was really busy. Very earthy, bohemian atmosphere. I loved it. A small intimate theatre setting with its entrance at the side of the pub.

Quality pub. Really friendly and welcoming staff, very attentive. Pub is ready well maintained, food there is amazing. Had a roast. Prices are reasonable. They have a nice beer garden, seating is comfortable. They have it's own theatre, it's also only a few minutes walk away from Clifton train station.
