About This Pub

Oh, what a lovely spot The Alma is – I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just gets it right for a good night out with friends. From the moment you step in, you're greeted by that warm, welcoming vibe, and the staff are absolute stars, always on hand to make sure everything's just so. The food is a real highlight; think imaginative, seasonal dishes made from the best local ingredients, whether it's a cracking Sunday roast or something lighter – and they've nailed the options for those with specific dietary needs, which is a nice touch. Pair that with their fantastic range of craft beers and wines, and you've got yourself a proper treat. The beer garden is another winner; it's massive and well thought out, with cover for rainy days and a bit of shade when the sun's out, making it perfect for year-round enjoyment. On the flip side, though, it's a child-free zone, so if you've got the family in tow, you might have to give it a miss, which is a shame for some but probably a plus for those seeking a peaceful pint. Prices are on the moderate side, meaning it could dent the wallet a bit more than your average local, and it does get busy, so planning ahead is key. All in all, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts looking for quality over quantity – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant – fresh, seasonal British ingredients cooked to perfection, with plenty of options for vegetarians and those with dietary needs like gluten-free.
  • They've got a cracking selection of craft beers, ales, and wines from small, independent producers, making it a treat for anyone who appreciates a good pint or glass.
  • The staff are so welcoming and attentive, always ready with a smile and top-notch service that makes you feel right at home.
  • That beer garden is a real gem – huge, with shade in summer and heating for winter, ideal for soaking up the atmosphere whatever the weather.
  • It's a relaxed and friendly spot with a rich history, right in the heart of Crystal Palace, perfect for a spontaneous meal or a catch-up with mates.
Cons
  • As it's strictly child-free, it might not suit families with little ones, so you'll have to leave the kids at home if you're popping in.
  • With a moderate price tag, it can feel a bit on the pricey side for just a quick drink, especially if you're used to more budget-friendly pubs.
  • Tables can fill up quickly, so you might need to book ahead to avoid disappointment, particularly on busy Sundays or after events like the half marathon.

Spontaneous meal in Crystal Palace after a long urban walk. Together with my partner we popped in for a half pint after a long day of walking and we ended up staying for a full meal. The service was wonderful, there were many gluten free options (inducing beers!) and the food was incredible. My partner is a chef and was genuinely impressed with the quality and the range of options and pairings. The setting is more a restaurant than a classic pub atmosphere and we really loved it and we will be back despite living on the other side of London. On the pricy side, especially considering the portion sizes are not huge, but totally recommend.

A cheeky Vegetarian Roast accompanied by the father good and well known Alma Bloody Mary. Top Trumps! Having not been to The Alma for absolutely ages, we took the opportunity to grab Sunday lunch after the Crystal Palace half marathon. Luckily they had a table for 2 available although booking is definitely recommended as the table plan looked pretty full. It's a welcoming place with friendly staff. If you like a bloody Mary then give theirs a go as it's made with their own infused vodka. Tasty. The vegetarian roast was good and I particularly liked the roast potatoes (crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside as they should be!). We didn't have time for dessert but won't be leaving it so long until our next visit for sure.

An absolute gem in London. I had one of their IPAs and dayummm it was so smooth. I don’t even like beer that much and I wanted to order a second one. I also had the mussels in a Thai green curry sauce and, again, I don’t even like mussels that much but I ATE it up like I had been starved for days. What a creative flair to a classic dish. I had all of this while sitting next to a warm fire outside under the beautiful Christmas decorations.
