About This Pub
Ah, The Abbey Arms – it's one of those pubs that just pulls you in with its charm once you're inside, but getting there might take a bit of effort. From what I've seen, the place is all about that genuine, homely feel; the staff and regulars go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening. I love how they've got a solid range of drinks on offer and that big screen for watching the footie or whatever match is on – it's perfect for a casual get-together with mates. Plus, the outside seating is a bonus on a sunny day, and it's great that dogs are sometimes around, adding to the relaxed, community vibe. On the downside, though, it's right by a main road, so you might have to deal with some traffic noise that could disrupt a peaceful chat. And honestly, it's not the easiest spot to notice if you're driving past, which is a shame because it means you could miss out on a really enjoyable stop. All in all, if you're in Colchester and fancy a proper pub experience with friendly faces and good times, it's worth seeking out – just keep an eye out for that entrance!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff and locals are incredibly welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
They've got a cracking selection of drinks and a big screen for catching all the sports, which really adds to the lively atmosphere.
-
There's a decent outside seating area, and it's sometimes dog-friendly, which is a nice touch for those who like to bring their furry friends along.
Cons
-
It's tucked away and not easy to spot from the main road, with the entrance facing the wrong way and no standout signage.
-
Being right next to a busy road can make it a bit noisy, which might spoil the vibe if you're after a quiet spot.

Amazing place to stop in for a pint. Bartender and patrons were incredibly friendly to slightly lost tourists. Highly recommend taking a break and enjoying a nice place.
Cracking pub which I was made to feel very welcome from the first time I walked through the door by the landlord barstaff and locals. Great selection of drinks and big screen to watch all the
sport, always a good atmosphere.
Last time I went there was in 1982 , John always left a certain record in the jukebox for me , and always had a pint ready ,
Fantastic little pub, friendly staff and locals. Sometimes dogs too! Decent outside seating area, only downside is its right next to a main road.
If you were driving along the main road it would be easy to not notice the Abbey Arms, especially as the entrance faces the other way and I didn't see any classic pub signage hanging... Inside you will get served by friendly staff and have a large choice of drinks to choose from. There is a table to play at, and a large screen to watch the footy. I didn't think there was loads of seating inside, and to be fair if your having a quick pint, it probably doesn't matter. Whilst they have some benches outside, it is hard to ignore the busy road!
