About This Pub
Ah, Sylvan Post – what a gem it is in Forest Hill! I have to say, stepping into this old post office turned pub feels like discovering a hidden treasure; the original fittings and cosy leather booths give it such a warm, nostalgic feel that really sets it apart. The beer selection is brilliant, especially with those affordable happy hour deals that make it easy to enjoy a pint without breaking the bank, and the food doesn't disappoint either – think hearty pub classics with a fresh twist, like a smashing veggie roast that's full of flavour. The team behind the bar are just lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which adds to that relaxed, community spirit. On the flip side, it can get a bit expensive if you're not catching one of those deals, so it's worth keeping an eye on your tab. All in all, if you're after a place for a casual catch-up or a fun evening with mates, I'd heartily recommend giving it a go – it's got that perfect mix of tradition and good times that keeps you coming back.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The unique atmosphere in a former post office, with original features like leather booths and vaults for private dining, makes it feel really special and full of character.
-
A cracking selection of cask ales and craft beers, plus those tempting £4.75 deals on pints and wine from midday to 7pm on weekdays – perfect for a cheeky midweek tipple.
-
The staff are an absolute delight, always friendly, welcoming, and on hand with top-notch service that makes you feel right at home.
-
The food is spot on, with fresh, seasonal dishes and pub classics with a twist, including great veggie options that hit the spot every time.
-
There's always something going on, from events and offers throughout the week to a lively vibe, making it easy to have a great night out without waiting for the weekend.
Cons
-
It can be a bit on the pricey side, so you might want to plan ahead if you're watching your spending.
-
The operating hours vary a tad, and with a typical closing around 4pm in some listings, it might not suit late-night gatherings – double-check for the day you're visiting.

The place is very nice,a bid expensive but pub needs to survive and you will have the opportunity to have a drink in a safe,is a old post office.
Good veggie roast (excellent Yorkshire pudding) and excellent service, including table service and a check back. Everyone that served us was very professional and welcoming. First time here but will definitely come back! Would defs have the veggie roast again but would also be interested to try a different option eg nut roast :)
Oh and not too loud which is Great (!) when catching up with friends.
I actually love this pub. Moved to the area recently and it has become one of my favourite pubs not just in South London but anywhere. Interesting selection of beers at reasonable prices (bonus for their £4.75 beers 12-7pm), friendly staff and I’ve really enjoyed the food too.
Great atmosphere where it’s nice and quiet without being dead on weekdays and on the weekends gets lively with some music. Love the layout and decor it’s a wide pub with plenty of seats, some nooks and crannies to hide in and still has remnants of the old post office it previously was. Come here once or twice a week and I know I’ll be here many more times in the future 🤩
Very good Portobello pub in a former post office about five minutes walk from Forest Hill Railway Station. Two cask beers on handpump when I visited. Lots of outdoor seating at the front.
The pub retains many of the original features from the post office including the two strongrooms which have been converted into small booths.

A Unique Post Office Pub Experience.
The Sylvan Post is located on Dartmouth Road in Forest Hill, South East London. The nearest station is Forest Hill Overground, it’s a four minute walk to get here.
This pub is situated in a former 1960’s post office and is run by Portobello Brewery.
The owner’s of this pub have embraced the building’s history by retaining many of its original features. This is a one bar pub that has its main bar area at the front and a couple of snug areas at the rear. The servery has a thin 60’s style counter with brass fittings. All around the pub you will find kitsch 60s decor like the vintage formica tables and wooden seating. To the right of the servery are a number of booths with an eclectic mix of prints and photos. The stand out features is the postal memorabilia including framed postage stamps and telegrams. There is also post boxes marked Abroad, Country and London plus the old strong room now is converted into a cool little snug.
The beer line up was decent and included a number of beers from Portobello Brewery including two cask ales and a good selection of No & Low. I decided on a pint of London Pilsner, my pint hit the spot, price point was average. There is traditional pub grub menu available with some interesting veggie options, Fish & Chips costs £15.50. For those visiting on a Sunday, Roasts take centre stage.
We arrived around 2pm on a warm Saturday afternoon in February. The pub was busy and had a nice local neighbourly feel to it. The punters were predominantly young professionals with their young children here for a celebration. There were few other couples and families in attendance enjoying this unique environment. The service was great, the staff were upbeat and friendly.
The pub hosts DJ and Quiz Nights, there are also deals on pints during the week for £4.50, check socials for timings and info.
The 60’s decor, postal memorabilia, great beer, popular food and local pub feel made for a very enjoyable and unique pub experience. The @sylvan.post is a must visit if you’re in the area.
