About This Pub

Ah, the Swan Inn – it's one of those classic spots in Milton Keynes that just feels like a proper old pub, with its thatched roof and all, tucked away not far from the town centre. I have to say, what really stands out is how welcoming the staff are; they're always up for a chat and make you feel like you're part of the gang from the moment you walk in. The atmosphere is spot on too – picture yourself sinking into a comfy spot by the log fire on a chilly evening, or lounging in the garden with a chilled drink when the sun's out. And the drinks menu? Brilliant! They've got everything from smooth real ales to creative cocktails, so it's dead easy to find something that hits the spot. Plus, it's great that dogs are welcome; makes it feel even more relaxed. But honestly, if you're heading there for a bite, it might not quite measure up. A few folks have mentioned the portions are on the skimpy side, and from what I've heard, things like the Sunday roast can be a bit hit or miss – dry meat or undercooked veg have cropped up in chats. It's a shame because the prices aren't cheap, so you expect a bit more bang for your buck. All in all, I'd pop in for a pint and a catch-up any day, but if you're after a full meal, you might want to keep expectations in check. Still, it's got that timeless pub charm that's worth experiencing.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always making you feel welcome and right at home.
  • It's got a really cosy atmosphere with a roaring log fire in the bar for winter and a lovely garden for sunny days – perfect for relaxing with mates.
  • They offer a fantastic selection of drinks, including real ales, craft beers, artisan cocktails, and a great range of wines and spirits.
  • Being dog-friendly means you can bring your four-legged friend along to enjoy the bar or garden areas.
  • The pub has a welcoming, community feel, ideal for catching up with friends or family in a historic 13th-century setting.
Cons
  • Portions of food can be disappointingly small, leaving you feeling a bit peckish even after a main course.
  • Some dishes, like the Sunday roast, have had mixed reviews with complaints about dry meat, raw veg, and overall inconsistency in quality.
  • Prices feel a tad steep for what you get, making it seem overpriced at times.
  • Recent experiences suggest the food doesn't always live up to the hype, with a few underwhelming meals reported.
  • While the atmosphere is great, it might not fully deliver if you're after a substantial meal rather than just drinks.

Booked a table for our anniversary as we had our wedding reception here. Staff were great, but the food and atmosphere not so good. I had chicken Kiev that came with mash and broccoli. The Kiev tasted great, but a tiny portion, mash was good and the broccoli was raw and was only 2 small florets, not great for £18. My O/H had a Waldorf salad. Supposed to be plant based but had ‘regular’ mayo that has eggs in and way too much of it. Half got left. Desserts were equally as poor quality. Lemon meringue cheesecake missing the meringue and the creme brûlée was over sweet cold custard. The bill came to £60…. add that to the very loud atmosphere, we’re not in a hurry to return.

Sunday roast was such a let down! I had the chicken roast which came with small dry piece of chicken breast and silly little portion of veg, literally, there were four pieces of potatoes, one thin stick of parsnip and carrot each, and a few shreds of greens. I told the staff that this plate is sad looking with not enough chicken or veg for a £19 mains. They took that plate away and served the exact same portion to me again in a new plate. Please pay attention to the picture I am posting below. It seems there are some other reviewers noting the same issue in the past. £75 bill between two of us for food and a bottle of wine, and such a shame about the food and service we received.

Had an early dinner, the staff were all very nice and polite. Food was served pretty quick. We had the trio Sunday roast which was nice and crayfish starter. I managed to find a parking space and we weren't rushed or anything. Overall nice atmosphere, quite cosy. The food was good too, my brother said we'll come again 😊

Nice pub, friendly staff. Overpriced food. It tasted fine but was a childs size. 1 piece of carrot, 1 piece of parsnip and 3 roast potatoes for £19 still felt hungry. Maybe Im just greedy, Id of eaten the chicken bones if i could. (edit) When leaving theres a sign outside saying unlimited roast potatoes on a sunday, wasn't aware whilst eating wasn't obvious. Missed the sign coming in.

I had a fantastic Christmas dinner with my work colleagues at the pub last Friday. When we arrived, the pub was already full with people, but the staffs were very attentive. The food was great and will definitely go back again.
