About This Pub
You know, Sutton Hall really is one of those pubs that feels like a step back in time – it's got this incredible 480-year-old building full of nooks, crannies, and gorgeous gardens that make it perfect for a relaxed afternoon or evening out. The food stands out as a highlight; folks rave about the fresh, regularly changing menu, especially those Sunday roasts that sound mouthwatering and hit the spot every time. Throw in a solid lineup of local cask ales and drinks, plus all the buzz from events like quiz nights and pub walks, and it's got that lively community vibe going on. On the flip side, prices can sometimes feel a tad high for what you get, and while the staff are mostly lovely and approachable, there have been moments where service wasn't quite as welcoming, which is a shame in such a characterful spot. All in all, it's a solid choice for a get-together with mates, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – the good bits definitely outweigh the niggles, making it worth a visit if you're in the area.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic building is full of character, with cosy nooks, a library, and beautiful gardens that make it a real treat to visit.
-
Food is fresh and delicious, especially the Sunday roasts – I've heard they're absolute winners, with tender meats and lovely portions.
-
Staff are generally warm and helpful, adding to that welcoming pub feel and making it easy to navigate the quirky layout.
-
A great selection of local cask ales, affordable wines, and a solid range of whiskies and gins to suit all tastes.
-
Plenty of events like monthly pub walks, quiz nights, and live music that keep things lively and give you more reasons to pop in.
Cons
-
Prices can feel a bit steep for the quality at times, like paying premium for something that's not quite as special as you'd hope.
-
Service isn't always spot-on; one visit mentioned an uninviting bar experience, which could put a dampener on things.
-
The layout with all those rooms and areas might be charming but can get confusing, especially if you're new to the place.

Premium Prices, Weatherspoons quality...
Most local places closed on Mon/ Tues with Sutton Hall one of the few serving food.
Google reviews this place highly and it was a recommendation by our ABnB host so we were really surprised by the experience which wasn't great.
Barman was uninviting and apparently wasn't in the mood to replace an IPA barrel that had run dry. Ordered food at the bar as we were sitting out on the terrace.
Food took about 20 mins which is fine but only received the burgers and loaded fries (side), the salad took a further 10 mins, which meant that the burgers were cold by the time the salad arrived.
Of the food, the salad was the only redeeming item. It was tasty. The burgers and fries on the other hand were small and of similar quality to bog standard pub grub, not justified by these prices. The Piri Chicken had zero spice at all.
The building itself is quirky and the many dining rooms is unique as were the ambiance of each one. Sitting outside may have been the factor to the downfall for us - although why should that make a difference?
We absolutely love this special part of the Peak District but there is nothing special about Sutton Hall so will not be giving it a second chance and wouldnt recommend others to give it a chance at all.
Got to be one of my favourite pubs. Now run by a small pub group the food, beer choice and service is excellent. The exterior and interior is full of character with many rooms for dining each with its own individual charm.
What can I say here? 100/10 for the food, went for Sunday dinner and was just "chef kiss". Staff were lovely and helpful (it is a stunning building but a few side rooms so easy to get turned around but the guys were super lovely and friendly if you ask for a route back to your table hahaha). Genuinely great place, great location and stunning food
Sutton Hall is a superbly located building with a wonderful atmosphere inside and out. Fresh, well presented food with a lower than expected price point.
The staff working are polite, courteous and approachable where their personalities seem to be encouraged which is a far throw from robotic-level service which has become the industry standard.
Massive thank you to Laura, Joel and Cat for looking after us and the pooch this afternoon
Absolutely outstanding roast, we had the leg of lamb and it was that tender it just fell apart. The kids roast was lovely in my boys words. I had the cheesecake as well and I can honestly say it's the best I've ever had. 100% recommend and we will be back
